Man I'd love a bicycle highway. Bushy trees to keep the wind out, smooth, flat (or gentle slope) roads that stay that way because they aren't being torn up by motor vehicles, and plenty of overtaking space so I can cruise while never going below 35km/h.

Another beautiful spring day! The snow is nice and crusty so I can ride my fat bike out into the fields outside town.

A system brought cold in last Thursday with the overnight lows being around -20C. Only -7C while I was out today. The combination of sun and snow has me wearing sunscreen to minimize my balaclava tan lines.

Borderline balaclava weather today. I managed to do with a skull cap for most of the ride. But on the last 1/3 of the ride with the sun at my back I had to stop and switch to my merino balaclava. Took the rigid mtb out for the first time in a month, much lower HR compared with the fat bike.

Getting tempted to take studded tires off at least one of my bikes. If I ride outside town and am careful choosing my route out of the city I should be able to avoid ice entirely. Still plenty of random ice on the MUP, and mornings will be icy for several more weeks.

I did my 40 mile route this morning and came back with my thighs more sore than they've ever been. I took seven minutes off my best time and I was wearing my not so aerodynamic windbreaker and gloves. Near the end of the ride I dropped my water bottle, luckily the plastic didn't chip. I might take that same route again tomorrow. I'm not sure if I'll be up for it or not.

Colder than I anticipated, dressed body properly but my hands and feet were dying. Really windy with perfect overcast but during this gravel stretch, I hit a comfy tailwind that had me flying through it. Ground was the perfect balance of dry and moist giving minimal sink and a lot of float for 28s. Was a good ride despite the freezing hands and feet.

Finally some above freezing days coming next week, but first one more -25C night. It looks like the next big push of bypass construction this year will throw all kinds of detours at me. But by the end of the year there will be plenty of new paved loops to ride to make road rides more interesting and varied.

I finally found out what a River Loop was(its a ride a lot of people in my city of Brisbane do which I never bothered researching to actual track) and completed it, added a bit extra to the middle bit because I could.
52kms and feeling pretty good about it, new PB for 50kms as well.

Guys, wear gloves please. I fractured my metacarpal 7 weeks ago, had to have surgery, and I still can't make a fist. I think I'll eventually get it back but the time to regain my range of motion is getting shorter and shorter. I've seen some shit in my hand rehab OT appointments too - mostly motorocycle riders. Wear gloves!

Choose a route that minimises the amount of times you have to wait at junctions. IE; if your traffic flow is on the right like real countries, make three right turns instead of one left. It's quicker.
Try and choose quieter side roads, but don't be too afraid of the bigger ones.
Always bring spares.
Take care of your bike. Regular cleaning is also regular inspections. Take note of odd behaviours and try and find out what it is. I've had experiences where a weird noise was my chain almost falling off. WHOOPS.
Flat pedals are just fine. I switched to clipless (SPDs) since I'm a madman, but flats didn't slow me down.
Don't underestimate aero and road efficiency. The faster you go with less effort is the better.
Leave a set of locks at work attached to wherever you leave your bike. That way you're not lugging locks everywhere.
Mudguards. I have two bikes; one for dry weather, one for not dry weather. I don't use the dry weather one much.

I dunno about any more, this is more a dump of my experiences. I've been cycle commuting for 6 months so I've bound to have learned something.

Check the weather religiously and dress appropriately. Nothing sucks more than being ill prepared for the weather. Whether that's burning in the summer heat, freezing in the winter, over dressing in mild weather, or drenched without a rain jacket.

Make sure to be familiar with flat repair and the basic tools required to perform field repair. A handy tip is to bring a good spare tube or two, plus a patch kit. Replace a punctured tube with the good tube, then patch at home. This saves you time and trouble from patches that fail to stick.

There are, like the Ortlieb Vario for example. There's cheaper alternatives but it's a good example for a backpack pannier. Honestly if you don't plan to carry a lot of weight, have a decently short commute, and have strong upper body strength with hardened sitbones, a backpack is perfectly fine. I carry 20lbs on my back for 30+ miles and I'm fine. A comfortable, well supported, backpack is important if you plan to throw down serious distance without discomfort. A pannier is still a great idea though if you can't shoulder the weight

I plan on cycling more, to improve health and fitness, even bought a new bike that's actually pleasant to ride.
But still, my work currently is so far away, I'm not sure if it's feasible at all, as it would be almost 60km in a single day.
The roads are mostly flat where I live, I did a 10km trip yesterday but then the wind really killed me.

I might try going at it once a week, just to get a feel for it. But I think I'm better off practicing a bit in the weekends.
I mean, getting to work is one thing, I also need to be fit enough to actually do the work.

Btw, I did do some 100+km trips in the past, badly prepared and with awful bicycles, for someone who never exercises it was hell but in the end I'm glad I did it, I'd love to do it more often but this time better prepared.

it's not so much the distance but how you pace yourself. You can make 10km feel easy if you take your time, go slow, and use a low gear or you can make it feel excruciating by going 110% the whole distance. There's also a good medium pace too which provides a good workout without killing yourself. Your pace is something you'll need to figure out from experience and it varies day to day, mood, and how well you fuel yourself. Don't disregard the importance of nutrition as it's your primary fuel source as a cyclist.

There's a saying for those 'gotta go fast' Freds who train hard to shave time off their sessions. "It never gets easier, you only get faster." If you're just commuting and leave yourself ample time, it's a good idea to pace yourself appropriately and enjoy the ride. Remember, it's not a race but I won't say it's not fun to go fast at times.

I just don't really know how to dress from the waist down. I'm not riding in my jeans but I don't know if regular shorts would suffice if I want to start by may and ride at least until the fall. I mean they should, right?

get a rack, front or rear, and ziptie a metal basket on it. then you just put a few bungeys over the opening or a bungey net and put whatever bag inside the basket

I have a road bike with an endurance geometry, chainstays are about 410mm, cranks are 172 and I have size US12 shoes. It does have attachments with eyelets for a rear rack. How stupid of an idea would it be to use panniers on a road bike? I think I've managed to mostly avoid heelstrike on the chainstay with pedal extenders.

what the fuck? something is wrong. did you do this on advice from a shop? you should not have to do that.

should work. not stupid at all. get panniers with adjustable mounts like ortilebs so that you can move them backwards if you need to. Get a rack which can mount panniers reasonably rearward like a tubus cosmo.

Because riding uphill you at least get the relief afterwards during the downhill so there is a reward for your efforts, plus you go at an average speed, even though slow(against wind your resistance changes with every shift).
Riding against wind, even if you're doubling back later, you aren't guaranteed a return boost(the wind can die down suddenly etc) so you're putting more effort in, going slower than you'd expect and you get nothing out of it.

Panaracer Pasela, swapped them out today, used Continental Travel Contact for the winter but those don't seem to have any of their puncture protection left anymore so thought I'd be fine with the equally fragile Paselas which are at least a lot faster. I've got the folding 35c ones, they feel real nice for a cheap-ish tire and I like how the tanwalls look, but not very puncture-resistant. Little rocks seem to love to lodge themselves between the tread and push through to the inner tube.

Yeah, it's the carbon C13 one. I had the C17 before and that felt a bit too wide for my riding, the C13 fits my ass better but it's honestly not really worth the cost, conventional road saddles work just as well for me. Maybe if you ride a lot without padded shorts the extra cushion of the Cambium saddle might be worth it. The surface of the saddle is kind of rough too so I think it might wear out some pants quite quick.

I finally got Feedback to agree to ship the parts to convert the rotation dial on the back of my workstand to the newer tri-knob style that is easier to tighten. But they want $45 US for USPS shipping to leaf land, which is ridiculous. Commuter here, commute is 7.7 miles, used to be 9 miles. I've gone 18 miles before but I think I bonked at like 12 or 13 (even though I took a break after 9).

Tried eating during rides for the first time this weekend, did about 25 grams raisins every 20 minutes. Holy shit it felt like cheating, I didn't get tired. Went 15 miles like it was nothing. I know to most of you it really is nothing but it's the farthest I've continuously gone. A week prior I'd be tired at 8. I maintained 17-21 mph (depending on wind/road/etc), tried to maintain a constant "gotta go somewhat fast" effort. I wonder how cheatey it is though to rest at stoplights since my routes were always through town.

My 9 mile commute would usually leave me winded and sweaty, tired AF, but today (with raisins) I felt like I could keep going on for hours afterwards.

I think I'm gonna try some local group rides. I still haven't tried climbing.

I just started riding my bike again for the first time in 4 or so years. I don't ride on streets, only a bike path that is completely flat and runs about 18km each way on the lake I live near.
My ass is sore as fuck even though I only biked about 25km on my first ride and it's completely flat outside of the hill to get over the levee. My ass is literally still in pain from it.

I got pic related to hopefully relieve my asshurt. Do they actually work or are they a meme? I don't even know how I rode my bike in the past without getting this butthurt, I'm literally bruised in my groin / inner ass cheek. It's better to have them while you dial in your seat and build foundation, than risking some chafing, bruising and infection.

Got a call today asking if I wanted to go for a ride even though the wind was 40 gusting to 55 km/h. 5°C and sunny, so how could I turn it down. Took me 55 minutes to make the 17.5 km ride to the start point. Once we got out of town we were averaging 15 km/h as a group. Ended up with 80 km for the day, longest ride of the year.

I passed a couple guys as I made it back to town. One of them came flying past a little later apparently taking a run at a segment as I saw him stopped a few hundred meters past the end of the segment. Oddly when I look at the Strava flyby our activities are out of sync by about 9 minutes showing our flyby point in the wrong spot.

Not him but I had this problem too, chafing where leg meets groin pic related. Makes the skin darken and get thick and tough over time, do not want. Thanks, gonna see about a more narrow seat. Feel like it's already fairly narrow at that part but maybe. Only happens on my right side, not left.

Fog lasted longer than I thought it would, the first 40 km of the ride. I was surprisingly comfortable despite it being misty and 1C. The sun only came out after I got home. I did my first ride on a highway that got repaved last fall. The old pavement was very pebbly and tire noise from passing cars was deafening. Its much better now.

Finally got warm today, but the wind was 30 gusting to 40 km/h all day. Went for a ride with the randonneur club. We turned back about 43 km out, so didn't quite do the 100 km ride that was planned. We had 5 people so it was fairly easy going, with long breaks between pulls.
Ended up with 130 km for the day as I took the long way home. Still only drank 2 bottles, finishing the 2nd one about 10 km from home.

Tomorrow the wind is even stronger, but if I head out early I can beat the worst of it and get a nice push back.

When I was a kid living in a small city I'd go everywhere with my bike. I'd ride the whole city. There was no risk of being jumped by nigglets.

10 years ago I moved to the state capital where people get stabbed for their bikes, didn't even bring my bike with me. But browsing /n/ made me miss it so much that 4 years ago I decided to buy a new bike. I was jumped by nigglets with butcher knives 4 days later.

It really sucks to live in a place where you can't have anything nice or subhumans will take it from you. You can't have anything at all.

I just wanted to be back on a bike. You're all blessed to live wherever you live.

Felt more miserably on the last 1/3 of today's ride than I have in a long time. 132 km ride in an unanticipatedly long 6h 50m., mostly gravel / dirt, and mother nature decided to toss in a 40 km/h head wind most of the way home. I went out for 125 km today on mostly gravel. The spring road grading is in progress which makes some roads really soft like riding in snow. When get to a spot like in the pic on a dirt road I have to decide whether I think it will get better past the wet spot. Often I'll try going around, most of the time I end up regretting it. So I back tracked and detoured. When I got to the spot where that road was supposed to come out, there was no road coming out, so it would have been a mess if I kept going.

Pulled a calf muscle while I was out and it got sore towards the end. It quite possibly happened at the same time I smacked my nuts into the saddle while hopping back on the bike after avoiding a muddy spot.

I was riding my hardtail mtb a few weeks ago on a damp wooden bridge and tried to go to fast around the corner, slid out and got wet bridge splinter road rash and my bike wheel was wedged underneath the railing part of the bridge.

I ended up having to break the bottom board of the rail with my foot to release my wheel.

Did 100 km almost entirely dirt / gravel. I was lazy so I left the 700 x 32 slicks on my touring bike instead of putting the cross tires back on. Still handled the loose stuff good enough. In many spots the dirt was really soft and loose like sand which sucked. We need a good 10 mm of rain get those roads to bind back together. I saw some antelope and cranes, but forgot to bring my camera. Lots of tractors out seeding fields, fortunately not spraying ammonia.

I got his plate number and face and vehicle description, but there was no drop box for such complaints on the local police website. What does /n/ do about these faggots? Isn't there any way to report them?
Should I actually waste hundreds of dollars for a camera system? Though that just begs the question of what to do with the footage. Get an NRA decal for my backpack? What? Why do cagers have zero chill? He didn't even get far ahead because there's a stoplight every 3 blocks that's always red (city's piss poor timing system.)

I was supposed to do a 300 km brevet today but developed vertigo yesterday afternoon that persisted into the evening so I spent half the day laying down to keep the room from spinning. I still felt a little iffy at 3am which is when I would have needed to start getting ready, so I passed on the ride. By 8:00am I felt better and did a solo 140 km ride.

I think the dizziness might have been a mild case of food poisoning as it came on pretty quick after lunch along with a few other symptoms.

Shimano are releasing a 14 speed cassette for road in the near future. Inside source has fully confirmed it. Not much more information about it but apparently they may use a slightly different chain too. It's been in progress for 5 years or so apparently.

Rode out to Surrey from Vancouver today to have lunch with my mom, then down to blaine, WA to pick up my new saddle. Then I rode along the coast through White Rock and south surrey & along the mud bay gravel trails in Delta before heading home. Chilled for awhile in a migratory bird sanctuary, it was nice. The whole area along the water after white rock is this really cool wetland with tons of Great Blue Herons, other birds and rabbits

Since last year I've had a recurring rash where my chamois meets my butt. A month ago I discovered that zinc oxide diaper cream does a good job treating it. But that stuff is super thick and tacky. Its designed to make skin water resistant so its difficult to wash off hands after applying. I need to find a type that doesn't include the petroleum ingredients.

What you would have to do is get your bike & gear now, and do some weekend trips to test it (and learn to pack WAY less gratuitous stuff), test yourself, and prove you're capable to your parents. Most people think that cycle touring is impossible, and the only way to do it is to do it.

And to complete the triathlon fagness did a 10 km run (55 minutes) at late evening (first time running probably since last year). The wind was really cooperative today. I did 190 km and had a tailwind most of the ride, not a strong one but still better than a headwind. Due to the route the first gas station after leaving the city was at the 150 km point, so I started with a bunch of extra weight in my trunk bag to get me that far.

When to Yosemite this past weekend, did Tioga Road up to the pass and back from the east entrance. 93 miles, 8300ft of elevation gain. Majority of the ride was above 8000ft, the pass was at 9945ft. We got hailed on at one point. One of the harder rides I've ever done.

Shit ride. Spoke snapped in the rear wheel. Tightened up the spokes opposite to stop the rim rubbing on the brakes as a dirty fix but the local Evans doesn't have capacity to do wheel truing until late June.

I'm up for having a go myself but the spoke broke right up against the cassette and I don't have the tools for taking that off, so I'm fucked.

Taking the wheels back to my parents' this weekend as my dad has some good 700C wheels he doesn't need and I'll swap the tubes and tyres over but until then no riding :(

Finished rebuilding my rear wheel tonight. Wasn't sure if I should tension then dish, or get the dish right first. Glad I did the dishing first, since by the time I got the rim centered the tension was getting close. I think I only needed 2 passes after the centering, one doing a half turn and a second doing 1/4 turns. Once I got onto truing there was only one small radial hop to deal with, and a couple lateral jogs.

I finally got to use my wheel building nipple driver several years after buying it. Works great for the initial pass to take up the slack.

Just did my first 50 mile ride. Felt fucking awesome. I could have kept going. My previous longest ride was 30, which I did Monday.

From when I got my bike 3 months ago through last Wednesday I had only put 230 miles on my bike. In the last week I have done 150. I just moved closer in to town so now riding both to work and around town is reasonable. I'm gonna start riding to work full time which is like 18 miles round trip. Then I do a social ride every Wednesday and will start riding to and from that which is 15.5 miles each way plus the 12-18 we do on the ride. So total I'm looking at about 140 miles a week at least. It's also texas summer so getting used to the heat now will get me in shape real quick. I'm feeling really good about all this. My goal is train hard all summer and start racing next season.

It's me again, same route, a bit faster.

Could probably have shaved another couple of minutes off but at one point I came across some guy who had hit the deck. He was a bit bruised and scratched but he was fine in the end thankfully.

I'm just curious. I know my brother who rides a lot less than I but goes to gym somewhat frequently is about equally fast on ~1 h road rides (night time urban time attacks +30 km/h). I beat him at both short sprints and longer rides though.

Cycling for 3 and a half hours really takes it out of me. I have a short sharp 20% climb right at the end of a long ride and I can't even get up the thing without stopping for a rest after 3.5 hours. Clearly my legs just can't exert the power needed anymore. I've been doing some low cadence strength training to try and give me the excess power I need to get up that motherfucker.

20% for 3 minutes is HARD.

Too much money dude, my derailleur is a 28 tooth max and my chainset is already compact. I can get up it fine when I've ridden for less than 3 hours beforehand. Just after that 3 hour mark it starts to get harrowing.

I did my 2nd longest ride. There was last minute route change that move the start / end point closer to home. Got caught in a thunder storm at 9 pm. Then got to enjoy distant lightning for the remainder of the ride.

I'm thinking about doing a 600, but I was pretty tired after this one.

50 km tonight, with 580m of ascent. I averaged 25 kmh but had a 25 minute stop at the 90th minute because was feeling a bit drained and hungry (didn't have any snacks with me so stopped for a sandwich).

I went out with all my waterproofs expecting rain, but took them all off after 20 mins and stuffed them in the saddlebag.

I finally tried to replicate an energy bar that I liked that got discontinued a few years ago. First batch was really soft. Second batch was firm but greasy as I increased the coconut oil at the same time I removed the water. I should be able to take care of the excess oil by covering them in oats. Next batch should be just about right. One thing I discovered is that lemon extract is a very potent flavoring. 1/4 tsp in a batch and it is very lemony.

I think I've gotten tired of long rides for the sake of being long. Did 3 hours 20 minutes and it just feels too long for me, at least right now.
Pacing is boring, I think. I'd prefer to just cycle as hard as I can for 2 hours and then eventually get fast enough to cover large distances.
