Is MTB suspension too good? I had a go on a new dual-sus after riding rigid plus for the past few years and it was too easy, the bike basically rides itself. I see dudes riding these on trails I could ride on an OTS, but I don't see the point outside of racing and/or double-diamond.

I have always been nervous of off-road riding. I have a hardtail that I take on very basic rides because it can ,essentially ,protect me from my own screw ups to an extent. If I thought it was safe to take my Ultegra wheels on 25mm slicks off-road then i would ride my road bike instead.

MTB shocks, geometry and tech in general is improving a lot, yes.

To an extent trails are also getting more technical and stuff too, and you're expected to ride up on the same bike you went down the gnarly shit on.

I always hold rear suspension as a bit of a meme.
You get a bit of extra ride comfort in exchange for a lot of extra work.
Front suspension is obviously very valuable, so long as it is lockable (i.e. I don't need, nor want, suspension on roads and flat surfaces).

I can see the utility in the front shock with older style thinner tires, but modern rigid bikes with 2.4"-3" tires can handle some very rugged trail. I agree about rear meme.

Im riding hardtail superfly 7 for a few years now, and when i borrowed my friends spec epic for a ride , it was as you say almost too easy. It had endless grip, and without any effort i cleared jumps in bikepark i never even attemped on hardtail on first try. It was smooth as fuck.

I think this is a symptom of racing bleedover into recreational riding. The newer tech makes riding technical trails much easier, which is a huge advantage for racing and training for racing since the goal is to be as fast as possible. However, the goal in recreational riding is really just to have as much fun as possible, and the new tech makes lots of trails too easy to really be enjoyable. To compensate, trails are getting more and more challenging, but that increases the costs of building and maintaining trails, and leaves a lot of old but still good trails unused because they aren't fun on a fs bike. I still think its more fun to fuck around on a 90s rigid mountain meme on a bit of light singletrack that's free to ride on and doesn't get much traffic than a proper technical park and a fs bike

Rear brake doesn't really matter, almost all braking is done with the front, so front disc rear rim is fine. I wouldn't buy it though because its old carbon on a mtb which may have been beat to shit, and I don't trust carbon even on the best of days

Except no, when you actually get good at riding bikes downhill, you understand that riding is more like skiing where you scrub speed instead of hitting the brakes. The rear is for changing the direction of the rear wheel (ie: emergency cutty) and front is emergencies only.

Mostly limited selection and pricey demos. Looking used to save some money. YT has some good looks. Fezzari bikes also seem well reviewed but I just can't get over the stupid fucking name.

Some people enjoy that sure, but I would much rather fuck around on a bike innawoods than stress about how fast I can get down a bike park trail. I like trying to get through rough areas as a challenge, not just to ride through somewhere as fast as I can. If I want to go fast that's what a roadbike is for

I jumped a flight of steps on a carbon 160mm enduro bike and the frame shattered in the place where the shock mounts. I didn't even crash, I rode out of it cleanly.

Ignore the shape of the frame and just look at the position the rider is in and where the bars are. It is the same semi-upright position with a very high steam that the old ATBs had. The ht is at a very similar angle, and the fork has a similar amount of sweep. The only real difference is the sloping top tube, but that's made up for by the long seatpost. His seat and bars are pretty much level, just like the setup on a properly sized ATB. the chainstay length even looks the same. Also, the part about needing one bike, the old 90s meme mobiles were literally called all terrain bikes, that's the same idea, a decent geo for on road or singletrack, especially if you have barends for a couple more aero positions

There's only so many ways you can make a bike, but his bikes have a pretty radical fork. But I still don't know what the fuck you're on about I never claimed he invented bikes just that he has an interesting attitude for one-bike, where other manufacturers now differentiate road/cx/gravel/enduro/cross-country/downhill/street/all-terrain.
