I was riding my first generation Raleigh Grand Prix and some trogladyte backed his truck over the front of it, and walking home I found that frame propped between the lid and body of a trash can. Painted it with tractor paint on a hot day so it would create a ripple texture.

It's a Schwinn, if I remember correctly. It has the Schwinn seat stays and was in Schwinn Blue. I cannot for the life of my figure out which one. None of hte pictures have the smooth head tube. It's early. 1960's I think. Was like a World Tourer III or something, but nothing comes up on that.

Sheldon has a few articles on bike fit, mostly about top-tube length being more important than seat-tube length and leg positions.

Basically, if you can stand over the frame and the reach to the bars is right, the frame is the right size for you unless the seat-tube angle is wonky.

But yeah the frame happened to fit perfectly. It's not light, but it's comfortable and has held up.

Running 9 speed, 11-34, 700x45's that barely fit. Weights in at 26 lbs, which isn't bad for a bike I built to be abused on the trails.

Sheldy is wrong though.

His advice really applies to old quill stem bikes, where there was lots of vertical adjustability, and it was a pain in the ass to swap stems.

Also he didn't realize how awful the 76 degree seat tube angle because muh top tube length is because he wasn't a midget.

Sizing by height will get you the best compromise between stem/seatpost height, and stem length, because torso and leg length are inversely related.

As long as the handlebars, saddle, and cranks have a good position in relation to each other, one can straddle the top tube comfortably, and the stem isn't too long or short, then a bike can fit. You can adjust a bike to move all these things, although stem length will change. Seat tube angle can be remedied a bit with saddle/seatpost interface. This is why he placed the most importance on the top tube length.

If a seatpost looks like it's barely sticking out it doesn't necessarily mean a frame is too large.

You realise that what you said means as your legs get longer your torso gets shorter and as your torso gets longer your legs get shorter, right?

I just want to be clear that that's what you meant, because that's what an inverse relationship would be in this case.

Seat-tube angles being the same, the actual height of the bike doesn't matter if you can just raise the seatpost to the right height. Headtube length matters a lot more, because if the frame is too short and you throw a longer stem on it completely changes how the bike feels to control and where your center of mass is over the front wheel. Personally, I prefer a shorter stem and narrower bars with a longer top-tube, while other prefer an extremely short top-tube and a very long stem.

He doesn't necessarily have a bad fit. Maybe just not a racing fit. More upright positions aren't exactly bad things, and a larger frame can give you a more upgright position within being too tall to stand over or having bad knee angles. He's also not running clips or straps, so the seat can be lower.

Just to ask. I'm going to go on a bet and say you bought the bike recently, and aren't a 135 lb, 5'7" 23 year old. There's nothing wrong with your fit, and since you're running flat pedals, you probably don't keep your toes centered as much on the pedal, meaning the seat can be lower.

That saddle-bar drop is pretty silly tho. Maybe good for fighting headwinds on smooth gravel in Nebraska or Iowa, but that would suck for descending on mountain fire roads.

If you go to clipless you will probably have your clip position your food farther back, which would mean you should lift the saddle and maybe move it back a litttle to keep the same range of motion on your legs. Since you clearly aren't a veteran, you will and should trend toward a higher saddle and lower bars with time as you get more adapted to cycling, but there is generally a range that is just fine. Usually a couple of inches on the saddle and a bit more on bar height.

Those tires probably aren't knobby enough for mud mud the bike can probably take something that would work for cyclocross. You can probably do dry stuff fairly safely as is.

Trust me, no chance you're hitting 80mph no matter the gearing. The wind resistance is just too high. Maybe in the low to mid 60's. Hang your hand out of your car at 80mph and imagine pedalling your whole body through that, even down hill.

Top portion is a piece of plastic from a jug of some sort with some reflective tape, bottom portion is some vinyl matting ziptied to it. The matting has tons of give but the plastic is fairly stiff, so it holds it's shape reasonably well.

Chain tug - a Surly Hurdy Gurdy, to be precise. It retains the axle from slipping forward in the horizontal dropout (not really necessary with good Shimano QRs), and also allows for easy single-speed setup if I mulch the rear derailleur miles from home.

Yes, Gevenalle-modified Tektro levers, with Shimano Ultegra 9-spd bar ends on them. Shifting is about like any other friction shifter setup; maybe even a little easier than thumbies or bar end.

I don't like bar-ends much on off-road bikes; too many chances to bash knees on the shifters. Thumbies are fine on flat-bar bikes but there's not a lot of room on the tops of these bars (especially with the bag in the middle).

You can only really shift from the hoods with the Gevenalle setup - which isn't exactly what I'd want on a dirt-drop - but this is a mix&match drivetrain and I really didn't want the hassle of getting a road brifter to play nicely with shifting a MTB triple.

Yeah, the Paul seat QR is adjustable - there's a socket head cap screw on the other side to adjust the clamp pressure, just like you'd adjust the nut on the end of a QR wheel skewer. It clamps waaaaaay better than a Salsa Fliplock.

I used to do shit like this but I'm not a fan anymore. The BB ends up jacked sky-high and it feels like the bike is on stilts. Funny for a while but a worse daily rider IMHO.

Yeah, I'm pretty smol at 5'6" but I'm also half Japanese, half Filipino so relatively speaking I did ok on the height curve. Asians tend to be on the manlet side, even more so than me. My frame is also aluminum so the tubes are wider than steel making it seem smaller than the 52cm it is with the down tube touching the top tube at the head tube. Looking at your head tube height, I can tell you're tall af, looks about a 62cm frame. Cool setup though, I can never do white tape, I'd dirty it quick then my obsessive nature will kick in.

They're called truss rods. They're mostly aesthetic. Might strengthen the fork very minorly. Same as the tank. It houses the horn but it's seldom used. Both are commonly used to mimic to look of a motorcycle.

are you thinking of a sportier saddle or something wider?

you should also consider fenders if you're riding in a dense metropolitan area andif your bike will admit them. i personally used to be really against fenders and thought they spoiled the looks of a bike, but then when i realized half the puddles in my city were probably urine that was then winding up on my crankset and all over my back, i permanently changed my mind about that.

Fenders are awesome. Even if his bike doesn't have eyelets, he can always for stay/fork mounted fenders like raceblades. I blame /n/ for making me think fenders are aesthetically comfy. And here's my daily rider. The front derailleur is broken so I'm stuck with only using the small chainring for now.
Thankfully I was able to 3D print a new bracket and now I'm just waiting for replacement rivets to come in the mail

Look on the seat tube and on the bottom bracket. There is a serial number somewhere. But I'm thinking it's probably been completely fovrtrd by that horrible paint that looks like it's slapped on monsterously thick. Especially if the paint was applied without fully stripping the frame the SN would be completely obstructed.

So your first order of business is takenthenwhlle thing apart. Buy some Aircraft stripper, and strip the paint off. Find the serial numbers and confirm is a mid 80s mid to low level Raliegh frame. Then repaint it properly.

If a bike shop tells you "it's a good frame" but they are not able or willing to offer you the exact year and model of the frame, that means it's a bottom tier frame.

It's probably a Grand Prix or Super Record which were by and large the best selling two bikes (which means there would be a glut of them in the used market). They sold so well because they were the cheapest and most acessible.

In short. You got a good frame, probably, but it's not worth anything (especially in it's current form) and it's nothing special. If you're curious strip the paint and find the SN. Otherwise ride it til it dies.

never had a bike fitting. my bars are pretty close to saddle height, though. I don't know if it's because I'm tall or what but I prefer to stretch out in a more forward position for cruising/aero with bullhorns or bar ends instead of folded downwards. I don't race so IDGAF.

If you mean through the top cap and down the steerer that only works for the front brake. Gyros are an option for the rear brake but add cost, require a frame with gyro tabs or an adapter plate that will fit, and add friction due to doubling up the cables.

Yea I'm waiting on a new RD because Sram shit lasts about 2 weeks before it dies and you need new shit. The bearings/pulleys on that RD are so fucked, has a lot of slack because I hate not having a lot of cable to work with.

Frankly, any u-lock is as good as any other. Just get one that can't be picked. Just avoid chains and cable locks.

Consider swapping out the quick releases for some hex key skewers, too.

As for helmets. They all meet the same safety standards in the USA and Europe. Find one that is comfortable and that requires minimal adjustment from tension straps and the like to not shake about on your head.

Now it has ChinkTech II™ The price is getting out of the scope of this project lol

I had to replace everything but the frame/wheels/stem/fork/saddle but it was fun.The shifter I designed for it works great, I'm working on revision 2 and will release soon.

Only gripe left with this frame is that the bottle cage studs are loose so I can't use them (tried jb-welding them back into the frame twice, might actually try a third time with more than 24 hours dry time), so I'm gonna have to figure out where else I can mount a water bottle for longer rides. Also still need to print a front shifter.

I use the SunRace MX3 cassette (11-42) which by now has some 1000 km on it and performed admirably even when shifting like crazy up and down. No noticeable wear, even the paint looks good, so I can honestly recommend it by now. Also the goat link makes a huge difference if you actually want to use the XTs 4 gears up shift feature without killing yourself or the drive train in the process.

This time I added finned pads (Shimano J04C) hope to improve the fading, and wear.
Also swapped the garbage SRAM PC1051 with good old XT chain after it snapped and nearly killed me. SRAM never again.

Going to try tubeless meme soon since the new tires allow it and hopefully save some weight.

Dropper next that's for sure but it's rather expensive for now.. but hey if there is anything I learned so far, it's that spending a little more and getting good components DO make a big difference in overall enjoyment of this sport so it's totally worth it.

As for droppers, I've got a DNM one (ASP I think) which is one of the best cheap options. No side to side wiggle which some of the other cheap posts (and even some of the expensive ones) suffer from and you can lift the bike by the saddle with the post dropped without it pulling up which is handy.

Yeah XT shifter does 4 clicks and goes up 4 gears in one action. The last click is sometimes difficult to get because you have to rotate your grip a little. The shifter lever does like 70º rotation, that's why I angle it so vertically on my setup.

Going to check out that post, I like that the cable is external. Also Seth check it out a while back so it looks good overall.
