>They also would only work well with ortlieb style mounting where the bottom hook is horizontal, not the more common type with a bungey cord.you're right about the ones in that bridgestone advertisement, but the older blackburn racks and their spiritual successors as made by soma are meant to work with both hook- and ring-fasteners.
>I think those racks have become redundant as pannier racks even if they were originally marketed for that use. haha- i'm actually kitting up a bike exactly like that right now so i can either run a small pair of panniers with a light load xor strap down a backpack on the platform (almost like an aero fairing). i was considering a low-rider but in the end decided i'd be too inconvenienced by the fact that i would only ever be able to carry gear with panniers and it wouldn't make for a very flexible commuter because i'd be stuck with nannying them wherever i'd go. something like a combined platform and low-rider (like the jandd extreme or the surly) i figured would just be overkill for the amount of weight i would ever be carrying on it.
>I understand you, but is [cantilevering] a real issue though?it's a Theoretical issue, which for me is usually enough to go to extremes to avoid it. having said that, i pretty much did exactly that on my aforementioned build. i spaced it out with a solid hex nut instead of a handful of loose washers and i figure that it'll be fine as long as i keep it light and retorque it often, but it's not something i would ever do if i wanted to take it loaded touring.
>I don't trust allum racks really after breaking a few.i guess i can't share any advice then: my bike usage is kept to the tarmac and aluminum racks are all i've ever had and only the cheapest one (a "blackburn mtb") has ever come apart on me.
>Please don't increase the pedantry even more I will keep going too.im in mathematics: don't even tempt me
