'Comfort bikes' are the ultimate troll bikes, because dumbfuck marketers and LBS employees convince a lot of people to take these BSOs seriously and actually ride them. Pic related is literally worse than a Roadmaster (Roadmasters are basically Huffys but worse for anyone that has never heard of them).

of anything to piss me off in this thread this comes the closest. Why do you need fat tires on pavement? Why would you ever need slick fat tires? If someone wants to minimize rolling resistance why not just have narrower tires? Most of all, why does this bike have a dropper post on it? When do you need your saddle out of the way when riding on pavement? Hurdling down flights of stairs?

Fat tires are comfy. Slick fat tires are ultra comfy. This is a chill bike, you can ride no hands over stuff that roadies have to white knuckle death grip. You don't run 4.5'' slick tires if you want to decrease rolling resistance... Every single bike deserves a dropper even if you just use to lower the seat to mount the bike. I can tell you never ride on the pavement aggressively.

Bolt upright position increases wind resistance greatly, robs you of control by putting zero bodyweight on the front wheel. Heavy frame, low gearing, small wheels, thick heavy tires (cheap heavy sus fork anyway, because comfort). Giant soft tractor seat on suspension post robs energy, will become very uncomfortable in a mile or less as the foam crushes and makes your ass numb.

I've ridden these when I worked at an LBS and the most disconcerting thing is all your weight being over the rear wheel, the handling is very easy at low speeds, but becomes frighteningly whippy as speeds increase and washes out very easily when cornering even slightly fast.
As I said, they serve a purpose, for old people to buy and ride at a slow jogging pace around suburban neighborhoods and bike paths.

Probably right, these basically never came in for service despite our shop offering free "adjustments" and cheap rates on actual service. I do remember one crazy old guy who rode the shit out of his, stuck a bunch of shitty walmart accessories on it and was always coming in to have us change flats since his hands were too weak to do it himself.

I thought the point of fat bikes was to enable riding stability where other bikes would have a hard time, ie. shit roads or snow or stuff like that.

Honestly it sounds nice, I live in a weather zone where roads are bad about six months of the year, would commute more by bike if I had one (and if I didn't think every hilljack in the area had it out for me).

You laugh. I took this beast, after three years of riding it, to actual mountains and I almost shredded rear tyre and actually shredded two tubes and lost 20 patches trying to fix snake bites. After some time I called it quits and called for rescue after 30 mile mountain section. Which cut my trip by half.

I am now pondering switching the rear to 650b with some meaty 2" tyres.

There are rims that are intended specifically for disc brakes; they don't have a brake track for a rim brake. The sidewalls of the rim are not perpendicular to the ground/parallel to each other, and the sidewalls are not thicker to account for brake wear.

Using a rim brake on a disc rim results in a poorly performing brake and greatly decreased lifetime of the rim.

Anyway, the the frame belonged to a customer who never cleans his bike and it needed every bearing and moving part replaced. He sold me the complete bike for $100 and I sold the stem, bars, saddle, pedals, and tires for a total of $400. I used parts bin stuff, along with a new shifter, cables, brake pads, tubes,headset, BB bearings, and grips.

i worked at a bike shop that sold these things and cant even fucking begin to tell you how many times customers asked if it was a motor and how many times i had to explain its just to hold a tube and some shit.

honestly i dont hate the idea of integrated storage (i like the way they do it on their mountain bikes, you can store shit inside the downtube via a door) but this specific one is kinda annoying and a saddlebag works better. at least they made it easy to take off the bike?

It behaves differently from the normal bike they're used to, that's why they're having trouble with it, not because the bike itself is somehow flawed. It's the same as when you put on skates for the first time - even though you're supposed to be pretty skilled at walking normally, you still can barely stand at first. But this never stops people from doing all kinds of things on skates after they get used to them.

Then don't fucking jump on it and expect not to fall until you can use centrifugal force or sideways acceleration to line them "switches" up in a way you want to before landing, or cope with random amount of sideways slip after landing. And yes, you need to learn to do it just like any other bicycle trick.

I haven't used drops much but wouldn't the lower cross bar get in the way of the thumbs when in the drops? Placing the thumbs above that bar seems like the hands would end up too high and put the wrists at an uncomfortable angle.

zipping a zipper on either side is a lot more easy than removing the wheel, deflating the tube, prying off the tire, partially inflating the tube to install it into the studded tire, deflating it again, fitting the tube and one side of the tire bead into the rim, levering the other bead onto the rim, inflating the tube, and replacing the wheel.
If you live somewhere with a winter where it doesn't stay below zero for 4 solid months and the snow-packed streets thaw and re-freeze many times (like, say, Ohio) this would be far preferable than doing the above paragraph before work every time.

I think they put a 650b wheel in there so it would fit into the fender. It looks like the brake "works" it's just that they think it's OK for the pads to grip the tire sidewalls.

The trekking bar and bar-ends are nice, and I really want to like this frame because it seems to be a nice solution for a full-sized folder.
It it? It's branded Fuji so it's not some mystery chink or walmart garbage, but I suppose they're capable of making a stinker anyway. The fact that IIRC it was made as a prize for redeeming the Marlboro cigarette coupons seems to indicate cheap crap. But Fuji. I can't tell what to think.
How does that frame ride compared to other bikes? Have you ever owned a regular bike to compare it with?
Can you post a pic of it folded?

Frame appears to be gaspipe, with the exception of a straight-gauge 4130 seat tube. Seatpost size is 26.4 mm. Street diameter is 1-inch. Original components were '90s big-box tier, but I bought the bike as a half-resurrected frameset and scavenged used components online to build it up. Fork is not original; it's some gas-pipe job from a co-op with an excessively-long steerer; I cut the threaded excess off, installed a Cane Creek 40 threadless headset + spacers + IRD shock-damping stem-raiser, and was off to the races.

None of the frame tubes are butted, so a lightweight rider may regard the frame as feeling "dead;" I'm a fatass, so stifferer is betterer. Only other bike of mine is a C-dale, so this rides like that one while being several pounds heavier.

On the plus side, it turns out that a 40-year-old Suntour bar-con can shift a Shimano Saint M800 derailleur through its entire range.

the bikeforums thread people were saying that it was full 4130 steel but none of them knew about the PTB rebadge, so looks like your research trumps theirs. But they were saying getting rid of the stock parts brought the weight down to respectable, normal levels, so maybe the steel isn't gaspipe?
people seem positive on them as they're an OK-ish bike with an OK-ish folding mech (except you have to just carry around the seatpost in your other hand, I guess?) and primarily because most of the used market is flooded with like-new bikes because the smokers got it free and then didn't ride because they were heavy smokers lol, so people are finding them for $20 unridden.

Also the PTB apparently stands for PorTable Bike, stupid chinks lol

Are they really bad? I have a 90s mountain back and when I ride like 8km+ it really starts to hur my back, these more straight bak riding bikes, as I remember once, are quite comfortable, so why is this bike that bad?

"Back pain while cycling is usually caused by poor cycling posture. Good cycling posture is very different from good posture while sitting or standing. A posture that is comfortable for sitting still will not necessarily be comfortable while actually riding a bicycle. this is a common misconception, not one that I was able to get over without experiencing it first hand.

I'm not sure 'why' other riders do what they do, but for me..

1. fatter tires allow for much greater lateral contact, so that climbing curbs, turning, or taking on debri is easier

2, fatter tires are comfier

3: fatter tires have LESS roll resistance because the contact patch is more like a circle than a stretched out oval

4: reduces pinch and wheel damage over climing curbs or running into misc bullshit.

my experience is from commuting on all sorts of pavement and sidewalks for the last 6 years daily, I can say for the first 3 years running on 23-28 tires, moving up to 42 slicks was the best change in my ride in speed, comfort and agility. That and going tubeless.

also slicks have better grip on wet pavement than knobbys.. a lot better.
