Shimano might not be ready to play catch up, then again, given how incremental 9100 was, maybe they are. It's so ugly and heavy though. Record is really just Chorus now.

Is there a theoretical limit to the number of rear cogs? I imagine it must be to the point where the standard materials used in the construction of chains can no longer deal with the torsional forces at such a thinness of chain

You could get away with a pretty thin chain on a road specific drivetrain. Shimano has patents for 14 speed cassettes. Modern bike chains are pretty flexy laterally and with a single chainring you should be geared so you sit in the middle of the cassette the majority of the time. I don't know why Campy would invest in 2x12 when 1x is the future.

You can patent a 100 speed cassette, it's just a drawing, and the 14 speed drawing showed an impractical chain design to avoid having to be narrow. Chains have always been the limiting factor in deciding how many speeds you can have. It is a highly stressed component with hundreds of moving parts. And chain thinness basically relies on materials science rather than radical redesign.

This is marketing wank from campa, its just a novelty.
The only reason you would want more gears is to accommodate a single chain ring.

Cross chaining really isn't as big of an issue as people make it out to be desu. Also what matters is that the outer chain plates didn't get thinner which means that the chains should last as well as 11 speed chains. 11 speed record chains already last for ages so chains are literally a non issue.

The only issue I can see is that indexing mechanical rear derailleurs might be a bitch but considering how good campy mechanical I'm doubting that that's going to be a problem.

44x11 is the same ratio as 52x13. Quit running giant pro-racer cranksets and maybe you’d actually make use of your entire cassette.

I use my 12 all the time and 11 p frequently as well. I love the tight 11-12-13-14 cluster on my cassette.

50t chainring, 13t cog, 700x25 tire at 120rpm is over 1200 watts assuming the rider is 70kilos. Outside if racing, anything lower that 13 on a road bike is a waste of cogs.

I have some 11 speed SRAM and the chain barely holds onto the largest cog, I can't picture any more bend in there.

Chain doesn't get that much thinner. You just use shorter pins and thinner sprockets.
