>>1190978Turboprops have a high thrust output and low fuel burn relative to the size of the engine. Turbofan engines will burn more gas and have a higher cruise speed. One advantage of a turboprop is that, because of the large diameter of the propeller, you can achieve some great performance on takeoff, landing roll, and single engine ops (provided it's feathered). Another advantage is the lower fuel burn: a lower fuel expense can be passed on (or at least some of that benefit anyway) to the passenger as a reduced ticket price. Cost is an advantage too, as the smaller engine will cost less to procure, operate, and overhaul. You do have a gearbox though, so that is one additional expense, but a $1.3M PW150 sure is cheaper than a $7M CF34.
One main issue is that some people don't like propeller driven aircraft. They see it as noisy, outdated technology and some think it is unsafe. It may be a completely false claim, but they're the ones paying for the flight so their shit opinion matters.
