Plus airports just aren't built for planes like that.
Taking a successful airliner, putting newer engines, some lighter, stronger materials where you can, maybe stretching it a bit, costs nothing in comparison, and is pretty much guaranteed to be succesful if it's similar enough to a plane that is already succesful enough.
