Both of you felt like shit cause you didn't prepare and pace yourself accordingly. Additionally, cardio training is a completely different ball game compared to weight training.

I don't smoke anymore and I perform roughly the same as I did when I smoked. Maybe it's a little easier to breath now than when I smoked but a smoke before cardio was one of the easiest ways I used to get myself in the right mindset for long distance training.

Okay, but do my brevets count if I do them solo, and not on '''''official''''' randonneuring routes? I have done multiple 200km+ rides and a 300km+ ride, I think most or all within the brevet time limits, and I am considering doing a 400km+ soon. But they were all solo, and I just rode where I felt like riding, not on an '''''official''''' brevet route. Are they brevets? Am I a randonneur?

I think a solo brevet should count as long as you adhere to control time calculations

The >300km ride was well under the time limit. I'm sure I surpassed 200km well under the time limit on all of my >200kms, but there were some rides above 250km that may have gone over 13.5 hours due to time off my bike. Sometimes I get off my bike and climb trees or walk around or something. And hitting 200km in under 13.5 hours doesn't necessarily count if I haven't finished riding yet because then I'm not back at my start location.
