Why is the F-22 so huge? I understand that it's an air superiority fighter, so wouldn't something smaller make more sense? Like an F-16 with thrust vectoring or something like that.

Its intended to be able to deliver enough payload for a small bombing run as well as enough fuel to stay in the air for quite a while without refueling. The size is a symptom of the air force trying to make all their modern planes multi-role rather than dedicated to a specific task

Because modern fighter jets are all really big.

You need big engines, lots of fuel, lots of ordnance space.

Because those engines are thirsty and you need the internal space for both gas and munitions. Take a combat loaded F/A-18 and imagine how big it would have to be if all that shit were to be stowed internally.

It's just the size of fighters in the modern era. Look at the F-14 that was initially concieved as a air superiority fighter only and it's fuckhuge even compared to an F-22.

Actually, large wingspan has its own upsides; the F15's fuckmassive wings are part of why it can take turns at high speed and not bleed a whole lot of energy doing so.

Close, the F22 doesn't actually exist. They use holograms to project the image of an F22 while the real fighting is done by cloaked ufo based crafts.
