Extreme weather is no joke but it's easier to warm up in negative stupid degree weather than it is to cool down in 100F+. In both cases preparation and experience is key. In extreme cold it's also possible to overdress and overheat but a good pair of gloves, boots, thermal socks, and balaclava I would say is more important than a good coat. Meanwhile in the summer it's possible to under gauge water supply and bring too little, wearing shorts and shirt with a change in my backpack.

Honestly though, the worst weather is between 31F-33F when conditions doesn't know if it wants to rain, snow, slush, or ice or all of the above on a single ride.

In the cold it's important to keep the head, hands and feet warm above anywhere else. They'll suffer the most.

Can't really say. It's never very hot here. I just wear mtb shorts and a wool/silk t-shirt.

Wool base layer. Jeans and hoodie. Warm winter jacket. Shell pants with velcro cuffs. Warm hiking shoes. Liner gloves under leather mittens. The warmest wool cap that will fit under my helmet.

I used to wrap my pant legs with cloth strips, WWI style.

I tuck my right pantleg into my sock. Don't care if it looks silly.
