Depends what city and what line. Here in the Northeast, I've seen prices that range from $1-$6 per trip. Most lines are usually around the $1.50-3.50 range. Some also have range based fares.

Can someone tell me about how the smartphone/smartcard based fare collection works on the London Underground.
I read that the NYC Subway will start using that system in 2020.

I visit NYC a few times a year. Arrive at JFK, take the Airtrain from JFK to the "A" train Howard Beach Station, then ride the "A" train to 59th street Manhattan, transfer to the "1" uptown local and go to 116th street (Columbia University). The ride costs $7.75 ($5 airtrain and $2.75 subway) and can be faster than a taxi ride (taxi costs about $70, $52 + tolls + tip). An even greater bargain is I can get to LGA with a single bus, the M60, for $2.75.

Most of the NYC Subway/Bus system is old and antiquated, but it sure gets you from place to place for less cost and usually faster than the alternatives.

London has been heading towards streamlining their systems to remove the need for payment by physical change. The smart card (Oyster) which has had talks about being updated again with another new system.
Its just a debit card for travel that can have money put on or withdrawn at local grocery stores or train stations. It's capability spans most forms of travel provided by Londons standalone public travel company (TFL) which include buses and trams on top of trains. It is basically obsolete currently as debit cards are handed out by banks with this capability built in for a few years now(contactless payment) and phones have also adapted their software to these forms of payments (apple and google pay) allowing most phones that have NFC capability to use.
I believe that as fares go, all electronic forms of payment are all standardised to the oysters rates and physical tickets are a little extra in the very few places you can pick them up as it's around 7-8 bucks to get an oyster from a station and it's added onto the card itself so it's essentially free.
For the most part all travel on the underground is zone based and increases in cost the more zones you go through as a difference not a collective. So you could go through zone 1 and 2 a few times but it will only charge you for the 1 zone difference. 3 or more zones and it starts to get quite expensive for frequent travel and subsequent packages that you can apply to your oyster like monthly tickets also scale up in price the same way

Pay as you go fare systems are the way to go, since they at least allow passengers to have something with them to pay for public transport if they're not a regular user.
DC's SmarTrip system is probably the method to go with, though Toronto's Presto is also similar.
Nationwide payment systems do exist. Ireland is looking at making the Leap Card be more than just a thing that works in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford. The Netherlands has already implemented the OV-Chipkaart which is valid on all public transport. There are multiple systems in Japan which aren't worth going into one by one, but they all work, not just for public transport but also for vending machines and convenience stores, hell even online payments. Hong Kong's Octopus card not only took over public transport, but also work IDs, student IDs, payments in restaurants and shops. It's not even limited to Hong Kong anymore, and Octopus has conquered Macau and Shenzhen too.

There are multiple sources of failure for the system and there's even been a decrease in ridership both of the subways and the buses. Most of the issues seem to stem from poor management by the MTA, infinitely deferred maintenance, and cost overruns depleting funds. A big part of the problem is, as another poster mentioned, it's a state agency so it relies on Albany to pass funding for it. That leads to politicians representing country bumpkins from the outer reaches of Long Island and upstate NY having responsibility over the MTA. You can guess that they don't give a crap about some NYC oriented agency and would gladly run it into the ground.

Also, yeah the 24/7 is a thing, but I have to wonder how much better the maintenance and upgrades could be if they took certain lines at a time, for example, out of service during late nights. I feel like people would get mad at first and then get over it and adapt. If the subway can't transport a few drunks at 2AM but can perform more efficient maintenance, that seems like a win-win.
