I can only imagine if you got a capable geared rider riding in the same fashion as a messenger they’d be quicker.
I still love my fixed gear bikes though, it’s what I like to ride so that’s what I ride. If I’m going to be riding everyday I may as well do what makes it most enjoyable for me. I enjoy that style or inner city riding and I enjoy the experience of riding fixed over geared. I own a road bike but I never really ride it. To be fair I don’t really ‘get’ riding a road bike, I can’t shift properly, I can’t maintian a derailleur.
I rode bmx all my life and the transition to fixed was extremely natural, and the high end fixed gear scene is a very very similar scene to bmx.
I don’t condone reckless riding but I still engage in it and accept the risks, same as I accepted the risks when I rode bmx.
