This jet airliner in this image from 1959 had a higher cruising speed than all similar sized aircraft in commercial service today. What happened?

also just gives me a chance to post more boner inducing VC-10 which actually had the fastest cruise speed of sub sonic airliners

What the other anons said and an increase in air travel in general. Many important air corridors are so crowded that the minimum safe distances between all those planes puts a cap on cruise speeds.

Highly efficient high-bypass ratio engines came around and mady flying significantly cheaper and less noisy.
Downside is, they now go a little slower.

Hot and high Empire routes meant an aircraft designed with a stupid amount of get up and go.
Unfortunately VC-10 got that requirement.
While in service with the RAF if you needed tanking you wanted a VC-10 first.
When Concorde was retired it's Mach .98 cruise made it the fastest thing you could get stewardess service in.
