How are trams in Germany? I spend a lot of time on Google Maps and I was shocked to find out how many German trams and stadtbahns don't have dedicated right of way. Where I live, anything without ROW is certain to be delayed. I'm interested to know if it's the same in Germany.

Additionally, why was the Wuppertal tram system dismantled?

Tram systems in West Germany were dismantled for the same reason as in all of the western world. They were seen as antiquated, unnecessary and a nuisance to traffic. In West Germany, they mostly were either converted to Stadtbahn or replaced with buses.

City lacked money and traffic stream changed. The tram system mainly served the same areas as the floating train Wuppertal is famous for, so they ditched it and pumped money into the floating train instead.

Except Oberhausen, Saarbrücken and Heilbronn, all our networks are first generation, many of their lines were built before car traffic was a thing. That happens to leave you with some narrow sections you can't just easily create a ROW on.

And you can do a lot to avoid delays by setting traffic lights. They block cars from going into the streetrunning section before the tram arrives and at the same time are set to green further ahead to flush our cars in front of the tram. This of course doesn't work for fully streetrunning networks, but fairly well on shorter sections.
