I feel it worth chiming in to agree with these fine fellows. Nobody out on the street woke up in the morning with the express intent of jacking you and your bike, they have lives and things to do. Go about your life as normal and they'll go about theirs.

Honestly the only time people have fucked with me are entitled white cagers. One time I was cycling and a car suddenly pulled out of a parking spot and I braked hard. The white cager came storming out because he thought I hit his car and started yelling at me, even though people in parked spaces are supposed to yield to traffic.

I disagree. There are absolutely people who wake up, with the thing to do being to rob other people.

Fortunately very few of these people have vehicles, stolen or not, and fewer will risk their vehicles to try to steal from you.

Also, even a fat, slow road cone of a rider should be able to outpace the average street criminal on foot.

-look everywhere, know where you're going and have alternate routes if your primary looks iffy
-no earbuds/headphones, listen for whistles or other signals that you are a target
-don't ride alone, it helps to have riding buddies that look like Luke cage

If it's somewhere you ride through regularly just be nice and say hey to people while you ride. Acknowledge people, be kind. Back when I lived in the ghetto I had some high school aged kids pop out of bushes to clothesline me and and grab my shit but some dudes I always said hi to on weekends while they chilled in their yard came busting out the door to stomp their asses.

Also, carry pepperspray and a u-lock and be ready to swing that shit.
