Average speed for a hardtail MTB?

What is respective average speed on a MTB ridden on a relatively flat bike path? I was thinking 10 mph / 16 km/h. Well I'm not sure how accurate my time is, but I frequent a 20 - 30 mile ride and it hovers 2-3 hours or precisely 10mph only if I subtract a couple breaks.

Maybe I'm overestimating myself, but I'd like to think I'm way faster than 10mph (excluding breaks). That's only 3x walking speed.

I typicaly ride about 25 km/h on my 27,5x2,25" hardtail that usually is enough to drop some roadbikes.
I can go faster when grabbing the handlebars close to the stem and lowering my upper body, basicly bringing myself in a roadbike-like position.

Increase tire pressure, ride less agressive tread profile, get in a less upright and more narrow position, lock out the suspension and pace yourself properly.
But you will not get around training if you want to go fast.

Tire swap is the most important switch. It's something like an easy 15 percent on power just from that.

Riding fundamentals of course always matter, for all riders at all time. Proper fit, proper cadence. Proper breathing. Proper pedaling technique. Rule 5, ect ect.

Aero eventually becomes the biggest factor at higher speeds, but get the rest of that dialed in.

You should also learn how to measure your speed in the first place.

as far as speed goes, my default is about 20kmph.

I can do 25km/h with a 28x11 if it's flat with no hills, which is hardly ever. I can still hold onto most dentists on their Cervelos's and drop them on the climbs and be having fun while doing it.

Get a road bike, preferably endurance with 28mm tires. I ride my road bike on trails all the time and it's not bad at all. Your greatest enemy on your mountain bike is wind resistance and also the relaxed geometry is not allowing you to propel forward as fast.
