>>1196788The idea is to have a network like the Germans have.
ICE - High Speed Rail connecting cities with each other within Germany and with Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and Austria.
EC - Long distance international rail connecting European countries with each other via Germany.
EN - Long distance sleeper trains connecting places as far away as Moscow and Malmö with major cities in Germany and in Europe.
IC - Long distance rail connecting cities and major towns with each other.
RE - Regional express trains connecting major towns with other towns and cities.
RB - Regional trains connecting towns and villiages with each other and a city.
S - Suburban trains connecting a city with its suburbs and various districts of the city.
U - Underground or light rail connecting parts of a city with itself.
The whole idea is to have an integrated network of trains, trams and busses which allows people to go from A-B, even if A is a remote villiage, and B is a popular tourist spot in the middle of the capital.
Case in point was one time I bought a ticket from a machine in a regional station, mostly serving commuters in a town with a population of maybe 3,000. That machine got me a ticket which went all the way through to London using all the regional, high speed and international services which were required.
