The over 60s, reguardless of employment status all receive the 60+ Smartcard, and with that they can get free unlimited travel in Northern Ireland, whenever, and wherever. The one exception is that it is not valid outside on Northern Ireland.
If you are 65 or older though, reguardless of employment status, you will get a Senior Smartpass, which grants unlimited free transport on the entire Island of Ireland. That means, if you live in Northern Ireland and are over 65, you can get free public transport in the Republic of Ireland too. The problem there though, is that you need to go to a ticket office, present the Senior Smartcard and receive a ticket which can be accepted by Irish Rail's ticket barriers. The Senior Smartcard also does not entitle you to First Class on trains to the Republic and in the Republic. You need to pay the upgrade fare.
If you're registered blind and live in Northern Ireland, you can get the Blind Person's Smartcard which works identically to the 60+ one.
If you're registered disabled, you can get a Disabled Person's Smartcard, which entites you to 50% off all fares.
If you're a vetran who has been disabled in war, you can get a War Disabled Person's Smartcard which also works the same way as a 60+ one.
Finally, with the Senior Smartpass, you will also be allowed to use all of the ferries inside of the Island of Ireland for free, even though they are not part of Translink or CIÉ in the Republic.
How's that for integrated public transport, eh?
