Are flared "gravel" bars any good? I've heard they are comfy but it's not obvious for me why they would be any comfier than standard modern compact? Currently I have your run-of-the-mill Zipp Service Course on my cross bike, but I've been thinking of trying out Salsa Cowchipper.

I have Salsa Cowbells which are similar to Cowchippers but less flare. To me, they feel much more stable and comfortable in the drops than narrower standard road bars, especially when bouncing down dirt roads. Although I have quite wide shoulder so your experience may vary.

I run 44 cm Cowbells on one bike and 46 cm Cowbells on another. Can't really tell the difference so I haven't bothered trying to swap them or anything. Just make sure you have comfy and large hoods because the ramps are very short.

The advantage of flared bars is that wider drops give you more leverage, which is helpful when you're riding offroad and need to make frequent steering inputs.

There was a guy in the spring classics this year riding with super narrow flared handle bars. Looked weird, but he actually performed very well so I guess it worked for him. Probably more aero than with normal bars given that they are so narrow.

The commentators did not like it though, they thought it was dangerous.

I have 46cm cowbell 3 bars on my dirtdropper mtb. They give me a ton of control being so wide, and the slight flare seems to help me use more of my arm muscles than regular drops.

Or maybe the width of the bars force his shoulders to narrow, making him more aero. A bit like Tony Martin does when hes in TT position, he makes his shoulders almost non-existant.

I just put some Venturemax bars on my Soma last night, rode them today. They are AWESOME. I've never ridden flared bars before and didn't know what to expect but I am really liking them. It's a very different feel, its less stretched out, the drops are much closer to use and get into, when you have your hands on the ends of the drops the handing becomes really stable, and gives kind of a wide MTB bar feel. My wrists don't get nearly as beat up when on the hoods and descending over rough shitty gravel/dirt/washboards/ruts/rocks.

really slim bars are something you see more and more of in racing, Hansen has been on the slimmest allowed for a while. I have 36cm on my road bike which are really narrow. After 1 or 2 rides they feel completely natural, I don't see any issue with them being unsafe. When I use normal 42cm bars on a road bike now it feels like I'm steering a bus.
How much faster they make you from the aero benefit is extremely noticeable.

While still retaining a hell of a lot of sex appeal and ergonomic superiority, Campagnolo groups (gruppos or whatever the fuck) have fallen so far behind on function, integration, component availability, etc that they can't really be called relevant to contemporary cycling.

They're niche, hobby products. In the next few years they'll be relegated to kickstarter where they unfortunately do belong.

Campag parts used to be the bees knees though, gorgeous engineering but they've always been priced accordingly.
I like that they still use bearing BBs, nothing beats them strength-wise and they spin super freely: I have a 30 year old bike that currently has no chain and the cranks will spin 15 or so times if you give them a flick.
Try that with a cartridge BB and see how you go...

loaded resistance and unloaded resistance are 2 different things. go hose you cranks down with wd-40 and see how freely they spin, then try riding it, its shit. the difference you are feeling is bearings that keep most of the grease where it belongs vs bearing the squeeze most of it out to the sides. I have a bike from the 50's i bought at a thrift shop to steal its archer 3-speed hub. it probably hasn't be greased since then either and the wheel will spin for like 20 minutes if I whurl it.

Ye, i do know that, but roller bearing style BBs like these are strong as balls under sideways loading which is why I really dig this bike.

Gonna be a bitch stitching the covers onto the handlebars and retrimming the saddle though, can't get the damn rails off the thing...

the more I looked into this I come across things like Origin 8 Bullnose bars and Jeff Jones Loop H-Bar

I used to use bull horn style bars
but after riding some old bikes gravitate more towards dutch bike style
where the seating is very up right and there is little weight on the front wheel

Dirt drops are fucking great.

Two things to look for:

Flare: the hooks are angled out when the bars are viewed from the front or back. This gives you a wider stance in the drops (more stable), and you're less likely to bang your wrists into the ramps when you're putting some body english on the bike (getting rad off road, etc)

Sweep: the drops are angled out when viewing the bars from the top. Kinda a more natural wrist angle that's more comfortable, and it puts you in a bit of an elbows-out posture that give you a *lot* more leverage on the bars.

Both the Cowbell and Cowchipper bars have some flare (the Cowchipper has much more), but they both have negligible sweep - similar for most "gravel" bars.
