Cycle lanes are great, but I don't expect anyone from Crystal Palace to start cycling all the way down to the City, therefore cycle lane infrastructure should not extend out to the suburbs.
I could see the benefits of building the central section of Crossrail, however it seems pointless to have services extend from Reading to Shenfield, I wouldn't expect any commuter to travel the entire length of the line.
Bypasses are efficient for moving traffic away from the city and therefore alleviate congestion within it, however the same logic should not be applied to railway lines, as commuters from Richmond would most likely travel to the city centre rather than to Barking. Beeching did nothing wrong, convert the North London line to segregated bus lanes just for shits and giggles.
