That said, you can get a variety of tickets which will cover multiple modes.
With Translink, there are 5 modes:
N I Railways (trains services inside of NI)
Enterprise (intercity train to Dublin, jointly operated with Irish Rail)
Metro (Belfast city bus services)
Ulsterbus (bus services outside of Belfast)
Goldline (long distance express bus services using coaches)
There are an additional 2 modes which are partially covered by tickets from Translink:
Bus Éireann (long distance bus service operated by CIÉ)
Irish Rail/Iarnród Éireann (validity on Irish trains varies depending on the ticket)
A single ticket on an NIR or Enterprise train to Belfast will include a free transfer onto the Metro bus services to the City Hall. A single ticket on a NIR train to Derry~Londonderry will include a transfer onto a bus from the train station to the bus station on Foyle Metro (previously branded as Ulsterbus Foyle). An Enterprise single ticket will include a free transfer onto the DART/Commuter in Dublin to Dublin Pearse.
Outside of these examples, tickets such as PlusBus, mLink, aLink and a few other tickets for tourists have validity on other modes as appropriate. Final point, if you have a Monthly Ticket for NIR or for Goldline or an aLink, you have free unlimited travel on the whole Translink network. Last thing, if you have a Goldline or an NIR ticket of any kind, it will be valid on the other mode after 18:30.
Finally, Translink are pushing for an Oyster/OV-Chipkaart/Octopus/Suica card type smart card system to replace the thermal paper tickets it currently does.
