>>1205885I got some decent Azur $150 panniers on my first road tour, they both fell off on the third day(I didn't attach them properly and I hadn't done much training with them on prior to leaving or I'd have known how to lock them down properly so that's on me not the bags) and I didn't notice for about 15kms(I think), turned back to look for them and the cops had found them and taken them the wrong way back, thankfully they had a guy going my way who drove them to the next town and I was able to get them except one of them was destroyed completely and I still had 1000kms left of riding ahead of me for my trip.
So I got a childs schoolbag(bright yellow for maximum visibility) from a local cheapo shop, ten zip ties and a big carabiner and strapped it on with nothing valuable in it, just water bottles, raincoat and food.
Overall it lasted most of the way home, only broke on the second last day when I got a flat and tipped the bike over to replace the tube and all the water bottles dragged it down and tore the straps.
It was better than an Ortlieb(which I now use) because it breathed so all my sweaty smelly clothes, towels and socks could dry out a bit and it had compartments which are a godsend when you're trying to organise yourself on a long trip. But Ortliebs are freaking great for pretty much every other purpose, waterproof, stays on, fits a lot of stuff and cleans easy. One big bag means you're constantly digging around.
