I've always set my handlebars so that the top section lies parallel with the top tube but I see a lot of setups where they are tilted downwards like in OPs picture. I'm sure that must affect your reach. I imagine that it's easier to get into the drops. As it stands I'm almost exclusively on the tops since I have a hard time reaching the drops in the first place in my setup.

for real though, get a swept back bar like nitto north or surly open. the angle of the bar is way better on your wrists than flats. bullhorns are also nice and offer two hand positions.

I like my normal straight handle bars. Dropbars seem awkward in the city.

I can see the advantage when you're doing crazy long stretches but I'm not really doing that. Just cruising in the city or for a few hours on the trails.

I just tend to get really low and tuck my elbows in when I'm trying to go fast.

Most of the time I see cyclists with drop bars they are positioned the same as me just looking way more awkward.

Dropbars look cool though.

Narrow (~250-350mm) straight bar is the best alternative for city riding since it still allows you get narrow to pass and doesn't require special brifters or hand positions.

If you mount straight MTB-barends onto it, you have also the option of the fastest position possible on a upright bicycle, the crouch position.

Not him, but I realy like these Ergon grips.
Have them on my MTB, the larger contact surface is realy nice and spreads the load better.

These are Soma's "Sparrow" in the smaller size, pretty comfy. The drop, angle out, and setback are pretty much perfect for this bike.
Classic drops are great, though. And somehow make almost every bike a lot more fun.
