I know this is pure personal preference but hey let's hear opinions. It could be anything! GTO-VVVF, IGBT-VVVF, SiC-VVVF, Chopper, Rheostatic, etc...

Here's mine: Guangzhou metro Siemens Modular metro, AEG-Westinghouse GTO-VVVF propulsion system

Prague Metro's M1 stock has a nice whistle like sound. During the arrival, you can hear when the regenerative brakes cut and the normal brakes kick in.

I've always loved the sounds of DART's trains, and was surprised how few other trains make the noise they do (I'd only ever known that some of LACMTA's trains do before now). But these days in Dallas, they're gradually going through the fleet and replacing the motors such that they sound a lot like standard-issue Siemens S70s now. There are still plenty of trains with the old motors for now, but one day there will only be memories and old videos for the sounds.

As an 8 year old kid when they came out, they sounded like something out of Star Trek compared to the cam-controlled and chopper-controlled equipment that was running everywhere else on the T.

The sad thing is that the "old" 1500/1600/1700 cam-controlled trainsets from 1994 are still in service today, at over 50 years old in the case of the 1500s and 1600s.

it's not just a safety feature, I don't know almost anything at all but i think manufacturers do it for temperature issues, efficiency and a bunch of that, they could make very silent traction motors and the most common of them are a few IGBT's and new japanese SiC systems

Although they are pretty hated on for their lack of comfort (atleast in the original version) and their eardeafening high-pitched noise from a passenger perspective, they have a very distinguishable sound that is giving these EMUs character imo. Neat side fact: A similar derivate of this type was also delivered to Kuala-Lumpur, Malaysia where they run on an airport express line.
