The wing was designed for a plane that was light and only had about enough fuel to go from Paris to all the French cities.
The fuselage was designed to light and only carry a small amount of fuel to be light and efficient.
To increase the range, it meant putting in larger fuel tanks, making a heavier jet, making the wing be ineffective, requiring a larger, heavier wing that was not as effective at climb and descent.
To change the Mercure into something like A320 or the 737, would mean scrapping the entire wing and main fuselage design.
