Imagine having a ship the size like pic related.
Living a free life, exploring the world and always looking for a new cargo job to get your crew and yourself paid.
Do you guys think a dream like that is realistic in todays world of super container ships and big shipping companies?

Absolutely no space in the market. Bai Zhihao isn’t hanging around the docks looking for a ship to take his Chinese crap to South Africa and Brazil. He doesn’t want to charter an entire ship that will get there whenever. He signs a contract with a freighting and shipping company with a history of service and guarantee of timely delivery.

I'm always mirin' river barges on my bike rides. They seem to have a comfy house and space for a car in the back.

As far as I know that's true. Sometimes you get whole families living aboard.

nice article, thanks anon. Sounds like the tug buisness in america is really harsh.
I remember my grandfather was captain of a tug in Gdansk (Poland), see picture. But there, it was (and still is) completly regulated and under harbour control.

Granted most of that article is taking place in the 1970s-1980s, much has changed since then due to national regulations (USCG) and international regulations (IMO)

I can’t really help you with European companies since I’m only familiar with the big names, Smit, Svitzer, Kotug, and Boksalis, but most of those companies are harbor tug services only really doing ship docking.
