Frogs are objectively the worst clipless pedals on the market, so I guess I don't care to spend a couple hundo to find out why their other pedals suck and why I never see anyone using them.

Eggbeaters are a close 2nd to Frogs to being worst on the market.

I'll give you a hint; there's a reason the used market is flooded with "gently used" CrankBros pedals and it's not because people like them

Speedplays have a cult following. If I didn't have pedal based PM I'd be on Speedplays.

They also have the most aero pedals and can be seen on quite a few TT bikes.

For all intents and purposes they're all about the same except for what they cost. That being said the Shimano MTB-like pedals (that you can enter from either side) are ubiquitos for recreational riders and are almost indestructable (the bearings will wear out long before the rest of the pedal, as well as the tiny metal cleats lasting damned near forever).

I like my SPDs, but I've not tried SPD-SL so I can't compare. Either way, it's great and holds my feet as much as I need. I never accidentally released, and I've got into the situation where I would have been unable to release and fallen over if they didn't come out so easy quite a few times.
Although I'm using the silver multi release cleats, not the black single release ones and I'll switch to those after the current ones are worn, simply because I've never accidentally released.

How important is surface area really?
Can't you just get a stiffer sole to resolve this issue of having "hotspots"developing?

I use Look on my road bikes. Lighter and cheaper than Shimano and cheapo Look pedals can be upgraded with eBay titanium spindles as they use sealed bearings, Shimano pedals' loose balls would wear out the ti spindle quick.

I've got a couple pairs of Shimano SPD pedals and compatible shoes still laying around, but I've mostly switched to flat pedals on other bikes than my road bike.

it depends on a lot.
ive heard a loooot of issues of reliability with eggbeaters when i worked in a shop. loads of stories of them falling apart.

speedplays are pretty good but a bit complex and pricey.
time are good, pretty much everyone i see use them are those weird but nice 60 y/o dudes.
look is just a 2nd spd-sl

personally i like regular spds because they're indestructible, widely available, and i like walkable mountain stuff since im a messenger
