What are the nicest train journeys I can make in the UK? Preferrably in Yorkshire, North East England and the Scottish east coast.

Glasgow to Inverness is absolutely tops but if you don't wanna go that deep into Scotland there's always the Cumbrian Coast Line.

Cumbrian Coast Line, go from Lancaster to Barrow and then up to Carlisle. If you go on the weekend there's the added excitement of being pulled by a Class 37. I know this is North West but you can get to Lancaster very easily from Leeds and such, believe me it's worth it.

You could always go on the West Highland Line, though the Class 156s definitely aren't suited towards the line.

Well out of your preferred area but Exeter to St. Ives (Cornwall) is comfy in summer.

Newcastle to Edinburgh wasn't bad. the scenery was nice enough. I used to take Middlesbrough to Hartlepool to get back from work and that was pretty dire.

Apart from the well-known Settle-Carlisle line, the route through Hebden Bridge is extremely pretty (especially in autumn) and the line between Huddersfield and Stalybridge is pretty good too.

The first thing I thought of was the Beamish Museum with its multiple types of heritage lines, from steam to electric.

Also, in the National Railway Museum branch in Shildon in that same area, it runs a short line running along the original right-of-way of the Stockton and Darlington, the first locomotive-powered railway to carry passengers. They are currently using the Furness Railway #20 locomotive for that service; it's the oldest working standard gauge locomotive in the country.
