I got a 100 km ride in yesterday at 5:30 pm. As soon as the Sun goes down you quickly get these weird sudden cold spots outside town. Inside town the temperature is more stable. The sun will be very angry this week with the highs over 30C every day, and as high was 37C in the forecast. I'll stick to riding in the evening and finishing in the dark.

Unironically commuted in a long sleeve jersey yesterday and today as it was only 15°C in the mornings. Still keeping on the short sleeves for training rides in the evening when it's around 20, which happens to be close to an ideal riding temperature, and I'm going faster.

That said I really miss my 150g/m merino top, well it's still there but an arm got cut off it when I cut my arm open.

Since dhb stopped making long sleeve in that weight the only thing I can find in a similar weight is Rapha (for $$$, literally more than double the price) or a 2/3 merino 1/3 polyester base layer, anyone worn anything like that and compare it to pure merino?
Found it so comfortable in a wide range of temperatures.

Rapha has sales fairly often on their jerseys, at the moment core long sleeve jersey and short sleeve classic jersey are 70€ each which is a totally reasonable price for such a high quality product.

As if temperatures in the 30s wasn't bad enough, we have forest fire smoke now. Hopefully it doesn't get too thick. Makes for a neat orange sky glow in the evening.

went for a late night spin with boomerman.
stopped at the bodega for a gatorade, and a young teenage girl started losing her shit out of nowhere. screaming, throwing shit, knocked over a garbage can, then ripped her shirt off and ran screaming into the square. no one regarded this as abnormal. we rolled down the greenway, got pizza, then headed back up. got caught in a surprisingly pleasant summery downpour. windy af, mashing through sheets of rain. comfy af. downpour subsided, cruised home on the main uptown drag in a light rain/mist. ~30 miles. 10/10 ride.

I'm coming back from an injury basically caused by wind so this felt like the least confident I've been on the bike for a long while.
Descent time was terrible, by far my worst on that stretch of road but at least my climbing time wasn't rock bottom too.

It got up to 36C yesterday. 30 when I left the house at 7 pm, but it dropped to mid-20s after an hour. Today it is supposed to get up to 39.

The local Strava clubs show very few people riding in the evenings this week. Which is a shame because despite the brutal daytime heat, the late evenings have been great.

Yet another hot day reaching 41C. I left the house after 8 pm and it was still over 30C. Big drop in temperature when I got out of the city which was welcome. On the way back I saw a distance red blinky of another cyclist in an industrial area going a different way. When I got back into town my cycling computer temp jumped from 21 to 27C.

I'm getting a lot of use out of my headlight lately. It seems like the more lumens I have the more I want. I was perfectly happen with the 500 lumen setting on my old headlight, but on the new one I think the 1400 lumen setting is a nice level. Both lights are identical aside from the new one having brighter LEDs. Part of the issue is that I'm deliberately handicapping the new light with a shield on the top part to keep from blinding oncoming traffic.

Two flats today. First one happened 10 miles into my ride, front tire. Swapped tubes, good to go. On my way back, I was about 3 miles away from home when I punctured my rear. I carry two spare tubes for these kind of situations. While I was swapping the rear tube, I realized my rear tire is worn down to the casing on some spots.

Got home, patched the punctured tubes and threw them on the bike to keep the unpatched tubes in my backpack. Also swapped the tire to a shittier tire I have with meat left, at least more than the one I wore down. New tire day soon.

I bought my momma a step thru aluminum bike- the kinds with a comfy seat and high handlebars, triple cranks w/ granny gear.

Took her around her house and showed her some good trails and pathways to go on.

She called me out of the blue and said she wanted a bike but didn't know what to get.

So yesterday's ride was a 6-8 mile ride around local paths.

This was time elapsed which included about an hour waiting for a ferry. The brevet entry included a ferry ticket but the ferry was tiny so could only carry so many bikes at once. So I used the wait time to fix puncturesld tubes.

I chainganged with 2 others for the last 1/2 which made things much easier.

I taught 2 inner tubes were enough.

I think I didn't put the tube properly the second time. I just changed tire and I have troubles putting it back on the rime so I had to force with the levers, probably pinched it or something like that.

Golden rules of field punctures are that you should take your time and do it properly. Before doing anything, check the inside of the tire for sharp objects (careful, they're sharp) so you don't get a second puncture from the same object.
Then avoid the usual mistakes like pinching your tube. Massage that dude in after inflating a little bit.

They usually are, but the repair kit can bail you out of the worst.

You're already packing tyre levers so sandpaper, glue and patches isn't exactly a huge burden.

187km, my longest distance ever, but I got the remorse of not riding a bit more to make it 200. Went to a fortified village, pretty beautiful, I was walking around and taking pics, moved to a hill to get a nice view of the pit and take a pic of the pit-walls-cannons, I place my bike and I realized it had around 30 goatheads in each wheels, the ground was infested with that damn plant and I didn't notice it.

I had around two hours to walk around the village and I had to spend half of that changing the tubes (I always carry two tubes plus patches) and inspecting each inch of each tyre looking for goatheads remains.

Had to drive back pretty upset with low pressure wheels so my ride back to home was pretty miserable because of that and because I was pretty dehydrated and the surroundings and road were pretty dull.

Get this pump my dude. The high pressure version.

Gets your tubes up to 120 no problem. I tour and it has been an absolute game changer, normally you have to wander around looking for a track pump but not any more.

Went out on the MTB for the first time in months, tried to put on the switchblade faceguard without taking the helmet off and was using my phone front camera to try and see where to put things, dropped the fucking phone and shattered the camera lens. That was the only redeeming feature of that phone really.

Later broke the chain and had to take out a link to bodge it back together, riding home was a massive block headwind the whole way

It was much cooler today, but I still waited until the evening to ride since I didn't want to deal with sunscreen. Left just before 6 pm and did 100 km. I tried out a new cloverleaf in the dark that was just paved today. Headlight doesn't illuminate fresh asphalt so well.

The last few nights I've been hearing a bulldozer going back and forth all night. Last year I found it annoying, but now its kind of relaxing. Partly because it lacks a high pitched backup beep and its tracks aren't squeaky.

Totally picked the wrong evening to ride a gravel road north. First treated my lungs to a nice heavy base of forest fire smoke, then a big cloud of lentil chaff from a combine that just hung in the air, then dust from multiple vehicles wafted through the air for 10 minutes straight since the wind was but a gentle breeze blowing parallel to the road. And the road was graded today making it loose and slow.

Inadvertently have the start of a 4chan appropriate gps drawing that could be expanded when motorway opens.

Well in my case I live outside of the city and travel by train in the morning, otherwise I'd be late. After work I just ride home by bike. Sometimes I take the train back, it's then when people congregate to the bike areas., when there are seats all over the place.

About a month or so ago I got in an accident that totalled my road bike, destroying the front wheel and damaging the frameset beyond repair. It's gone now, I sold it off for scrap to start to raise money for a replacement frameset to build a new road bike. Done deal. What I'm left with is a TT bike, which is fine, but that's not the real problem. I have asthma and bad allergies, which get worse over time, but that are usually under control, but with all the fires here in NorCal making the air quality absolute shit over the last couple months or so, it's aggravated my asthma to the point where there were days I had to even stay home because I couldn't even breathe normally worth shit, let alone go out and ride hard for a couple hours. It's been kind of a shitty year overall, had my training interrupted during Christmas 2017 by the flu (which also aggravated my asthma severely, took over a month to get back on track), came back stronger than ever, but was broke, couldn't afford to race more than once this year, and now between the accident, and the air quality problems for my resipiratory system, I've lost so much fitness that the one event left I could do (an 18 mile time trial next month) is just not going to happen, even if I trained my ass off between now and then, I won't be at my peak, no chance of winning, I'd likely end up dead last. So that's the point of my posting this: I've been stressing out over it, and posting this here is my declaring "I AM DONE FOR THE YEAR", TT ain't happening, I need to chill the fuck out, "just ride", work on building my replacement road bike, and look ahead to next years' race season instead, getting my training schedule set up for that. So now that I've announced my Intent to the rest of the world, I am committed to that; no more stressing out about an event I'm just not going to make it to. Thanks for listening.

Took a ferry to the Danish island of Bornholm and rode the circumference (104 km) in around 5 hours.

The island had a narrow gauge rail network back in the day, which sadly was murdered by the automobile, so the island now has an extensive network of paved and gravel bike paths.

I think you either ride fucking alone or you ride with 300 people in a group ride/granfondo/race.

I prefer alone but I especially enjoyed last weeks comfy Crank Out Hunger ride. Good mix of super serial cat6 racin' freds, old hippies, thicc women.

I think if you are doing it for exercise instead of 'fun' or social aspect alone, setting your own pace and going wherever TF you want for as long as you want is the way to go. Nobody to rely on but yourself. No pace setter but the last song in your head on the radio.

There's a group of 4 mid 40s women who ride together in my area in custom jerseys and call themselves _____ racing team. Sometimes I'll hook in and ride with their pack. They don't have a lot of leg strength but they ride superlight TT bikes so they go fast but take a while to get up to speed. I figured they were lesbos but I saw one out riding with her hubby on his flat bar specialized road bike (he didn't get one of their kewl jerseys).

I tease but they're all right and on the road frequently enough and doing the same loops as me that they are a positive, their silly jerseys aside.

Changed the chain yesterday, it was way overdue and was badly stretched. After a out half a mile today it became clear my cassette was worn so I had to abort the ride to go to Evans to get a replacement. Spent the evening refitting that and doing other miscellaneous bike shit.

Saw a cyclist I had a good cat6 sprint with other cyclists before. Today on a MUP, I saw the same cyclist again at the beginning of a 3 mile uninterrupted stretch with a good tailwind. After drafting for half a mile I decided to do the 'lets play' flyby. He returned the flyby and it was on with him taking the lead, keeping a good pace. About halfway in I decided to attack on a short climb and took the lead. I held the lead for about a mile or so until he lit the afterburners. I wouldn't worry if you are cycling through downtown chicago's steel buildings but I'd find a place to pull over and go inside if I was in the heartland biking over plains and gently rolling hills.

About two months ago two people were struck by lightning on two separate occasions on the same day. One was just south of Navy Pier and the other on Belmont Harbor. Granted they were by the lakeside but lightning strikes can still happen here.

I nearly got into an accident with a car that was backing out of their driveway today. There were bushes and overgrowth obstructing the view for the most part. Although I saw them on time, there was light rain, gravel was spilled out all over the road from their driveway, and my brakes were useless at that close distance. If they hadn't decided to actually look where they were backing up I'd have been hit. They braked hard enough that I heard it squeal.

I thought I had my saddle position dialed in, but nope. Seemed ok last week but after a few days off the bike it was obvious today that it was about a 1/4" too high. Feels real nice now.

After I went for a ride I remembered I had another ride in the evening. I showed up to that one and there was only 1 other person there. The 60% chance of showers scared everyone else off. It sprinkled now and then but I wasn't even wet when I got home.

A herd of pissed off looking half feral cattle blocked the last bit of double track so I had to shoulder my bike, wade through thorn bushes, go through the woods, then scared the shit out of a deer, jumped a fence, rode through a field, jumped another fence and got on the road.

What does /n/ use to plan their tours? I like to use maps.openrouteservice.org as it uses open street map data, the gpx is downloadable and I like the option to color the route and height profile depending on steepness. I use the gpx in OsmAnd afterwards on my mobile phone.

flat and rolling terrain is mostly a midwest and great plains feature... anywhere else has lots of hills. I'll say though, riding through midwestern prairie lands from spring to autumn is super comfy, especially if you catch a low gradient descent that can stretch for dozens of miles.

I rear-ended a Camaro today. I was trying to move out of a turning lane into the other lane and i was looking over my shoulder, so i didn't notice the Camaro breaking right in front of me, and i ran right into him. He was cool though and i apologized and thankfully my bike is basically fine besides the bars going deranged. I myself just have a bit of road rash and a bruise. Funnily enough i usually ride with a helmet but i didn't today and today just happens to be the day i wreck.

September is shaping up to be shit weather-wise. On top of the usual wind, its been unusually wet and cool. Well below average highs for the next 2 weeks.

I can still get out and ride but not for as long as I'd like.

30 miles in the blinding sun with incredible humidity.

I got lost at this new lake neighborhood they are building and had to backtrack all the way around the lake to find a road back to civilization that wouldn't get me killed.

I had a new flavor of Clif bar I was excited to try (Pomegranite Chia) and I opened it on a flat part, took one bite, hit a pothole and it fell out of my hand onto the ground. I won't say I didn't seriously entertain the idea of doubling back and eating a road Clif bar but I've been over that tarmac all summer and saw all manner of creatures furry and feathered smashed into the roadway. I don't need dead raccoon guts in my groundscore

Caged halfway to some mountain bike trails then climbed the agonising hill up to them. Met a guy I did a course with last year purely by chance, caught up a bit and rode around with him.

Apparently he just got his bike this week and has been heading there every day, I'm not the most experienced rider but was already getting smoked on the downhills, uphill at least I was much quicker but that's not really the fun bit is it?

Made it around the blue climbing switchbacks way better this time, but there were still a couple of ??? moments

Already biked 30km today to check out a bike on sale on the next town a buy groceries
Got hit by a car for the first time, i damaged it a little but me and bike are fine (which is lucky, considering i was descending at 40km/h with 5kg on the back)

Today i biked 40km to check another bike and go to work, im thinking of buying it for messenger purposes since its a nice Royce Union hardtail and a good price
Got a flat tire on the new Levollin tire i put two weeks ago. From now on i will only buy Kenda stuff

Thanx man. And yeah I'm going to be putting my Keos on the bike before I take it out again. I'd just finished tossing the brake levers and fresh tape on it (still not sure if I 100% like the look of the Suntour GXP levers, but they are miles better than the shitty Tektros the PO had put on the bike for god only knows what reason) and was too anxious to get out riding to fuck about even a minute longer with swapping pedals.

The tires are dogshit, too. Panaracer Tour. They'll be getting swapped out. The frame has a large amount of clearance for a classic racer, and is weirdly good on gravel, so I'm hoping that 30c Challenge Bianca Stradas will work.

I think I freaked out a paranoid driver last night. I was riding around in the dark after it finished raining. I needed to find an unmarked crossing on the highway so I had my helmet light on in addition to my headlight. When I looked back to see if it was clear the driver laid on the horn. Probably thought I was turning when my light swung 90 degrees.

On the way back I got stuck at a stopped train, never fun when it is cold and damp.

Its always good to have a helmet light when riding unlit places in the dark. A few years ago I rode out of the city to watch an eclipse and had a hell of a time finding the dirt road I wanted to turn down due to the lack of side illumination. The MUP is bad in the dark, too many curves that a handlebar light won't illuminate.

I did my first deliveroo beer money shift today. In two hours I made just over £21 and I reckon I'll get more by ignoring orders from dipshit restaurants that take more than 3-4 mins to fill the bag.

In all I rode 16 km, and had a blast doing it.

10/10 do recommend.

There's a bikeway on my way home that makes a crossroad from a t-junction, and you ride across to get to it. Literally ridden it dozens of times and can't recall seeing a car going through there, but this evening there was.
