I have 5 conversions.
One is a long back cargo bike. I've never ridden it without electric assist so I can only imaging how miserable it would be because even with electric assist it rides like a boat anchor.
I have on two recumbent. Definitely better with electric assist, because recumbents suck at climbing. And on the flat, the thing can go so fast.
I have one on a steel road bike. Not worth it. You could probably go just as fast if you ride hard. If you didn't want to ride hard then why are you on a roadbike with drops?
I have on two commuters with swept back handlebars. My favorite setup. Front motor, torque sensor and proportional assist. In the winter, it's a godsend. Two wheel drive, electric front, you in the back, great traction, great visibility from upright position. Don't go for rear motor, the two of you combined will spin out and you'll lose speed compared to two wheel drive. Front wheel also allows you to have IGH in the back which is great for winter commuting.
