In real life, trams don't have big cartoonish levers for switching points. For example, Melbourne's trams are changed by a point bar which levers a mechanism between the tracks, so you have to stand in the middle of the track to change the points. There's also spring-loaded points that ensure you don't derail while going over them and electronically controlled points that the observer guy has no control over.

Really? I was thinking the tram has two distinct bogies, as you can see two wheels at both ends.

Trolleys aren't operated by wheels. The classic tram has a series-parallel controller with a handle and a few notches, a brake lever for air brakes and a manual brake lever for when the tram is not powered.
