Yanks, why do you do this? is there no convention for residental housing in America? Your houses are either VERY strongly built or are nothing more than glorified twigwork. I remember when I last visited the states, I noticed that houses were either impressively built stone, brick (and in some cases, log) structures, or downright horrifying matchstick houses.

What is a matchstick. Are you just talking about small lumber cladded with something like more wood? A lot of it is climate based, colder areas need extra layers of insulation, but that would be unnecessary in the south.
