What do you guys think of train simulators?

Honestly think some of them are great but some people I know think they are terrible and think model trains are superior.

I was like 11 when Microsoft train simulator came out. The amount of times I was blasting eminem while slamming the flying scotsman into emergency brake, cause I forgot this one piece of track continued into a siding.

Good times, even if the game itself sucked.

Model trains ARE superior, but they cost a lot of money and require a lot of space. They are not always an option.

I've never been into train sims, but I recently got VR and tried Derail Valley and I think that's a real game changer. Train sims suddenly become really exciting when you actually feel like you're driving the train, and they're a lot more intuitive to play in VR. Being able to stand up and stick your head out the window to look behind you is amazing, as is manipulating the controls with what feels like your hands instead of a mouse. (Especially because you can work two levers at once or keep one hand on the throttle and use the other for pressing buttons etc. when necessary.)

While I can understand the value of being "in the cab", there are quite a few model train controllers on the market that provide realistic acceleration and braking, and you can also add sound emitters to trains, traffic crossings, and so on.
