How do I get over my fear of riding with local clubs?
I love riding alone. I have a top tier road bike and am in better shape than most of you. However I have never ridden with a local club either because I'm lazy or I feel like people will treat me like a poser or something. I'm also extremely lightweight so I feel people will assume I am weak. Does anyone else ride alone all week?

I ride alone all week then ride with a others in various charity rides over the weekend. People have been fucking cool as hell. Everything from brosephs in their flat bar hybrids to old retirees in perfectly restored steelies to fat dentists in 5k cervelos.

The clubs seem fine but more for the costumes and whatnot. group rides (and not paying for them because you arent a sucker) is where it's at.

Roadie clubs tend to be serious and they are always busting everyone's balls so they come off as unfriendly. Show up on a flat bar bike and they'll probably just laugh at you.

If you just want to do non-competitive road riding it can be hard to find a club with that mindset. There are about 8 local clubs here and none that really do my kind of rides aside from the Randonneur club, so I often just ride alone. Some more general interest clubs have a subset within the club that gravitate to a certain kind of ride and you could join those people. I'm a little jealous of a small city about 45 minutes from here, they have 1 club and it does everything city rides, highway rides, mountain biking, bmx, etc.

The only flat bar rider that would have any business in a fast roadie club ride would be like a 70 year old ex pro with back problems, or someone with enough high performance saddle time to be on a recognizable basis to the other riders in the club..

honestly I don't know what the issue is I've never had any problem with riding with groups or with the people who show up the exact same week every week at the A level ride. All the other 'club' rides here aside from actual closed pay-yer-dues clubs are just essentially adverts for bike shops or chicken wing restaurants. (ride 50 miles, we let you guys park your bike inside and eat in a section we cordoned off because you smell homey).

My complaint with group rides is that the elite 50 miler is done by freakin' Buffalo Wild Wings and 1) their food is disgusting food for drunkards 2) mentally I always have issues enjoying food right after a ride as I am literally forking my gainz.

Then again I live in KC, not NYC or San Fran. Perhaps the freds are less fun and more aggro other places?

It should also be noted that I'm not riding some super awesome machine...I ride a 600 dollar no name claris rode bike with an AL frame and Carbon fork. I'm also a bigger guy, in shape but certainly not 150 lbs. I'm 6'4 and 250lbs so I crush the fuck out of the flats and downhills and have to push hard to keep up with the nice but fast middle aged skeletons on our wimpy-ish rolling hills.

They were not being serious as there wasn't a lot of power to the crank in that dojo. I rode with them for a while, told them where the new country tarmac had just been laid then dropped the group after a few minutes.

nah, in a cycling sense I am sure you are quick and probably climb well, but in a lifting sense you probably are weak... but lifting in cycling doesnt mean much if anything. I am in the clydesdale class of rider and I can probably sprint faster than 80-90% of riders for that 300m, but I get destroyed on climbs and am probably not gonna lead the pack for very long before burning out and becoming useless.

Lol this is pretty much me as well. I squat over 500 lbs and I get fucking d-stroyed on climbs by little guys as I just can't push 250lbs up a hill as fast as them.

The funny as fuck thing is that because of the physics and freds don't spin on downhills you end up passing them or catching up on the long downhill coast.

Nothing is more motivating than losing 5lbs and being noticeably faster on your bike. The only thing I can compare it to is being a newbie weighlifter and gaining that first 10lbs of muscle and seeing the gainz.

Pretty much every mountain biker I know is extremely laid back. I ride with 3 groups of all different skill levels. The most I’ve ever received is some friendly ribbing at my decision to ride flat pedals, and even that was basically complimenting my climbing skills.
I’ve never understood road biking. It’s full of tryhards, a lot more dangerous than other disciplines, and imo not very fun.

And what's with the stupid baggy "mountain bike shorts"? Might as well just wear jeans, the whole point of cycling apparel is that it's more comfortable and better suited to long rides. Which I guess mountain bikers wouldn't know anything about because they either get tired and frustrated after a quick spin around the block or they have to load up their bikes on top of an SUV and cage it over to the MTB park.

Every time I encounter a mountain biker who isn't just trying to do stunts on a curb, inconveniencing pedestrians and causing everyone in the bike lanes to slow down or swerve to avoid a catastrophe, it's because they're cat 6'ing me from a dead stop before burning out after a half a mile or so when their weak overworked hearts give out. Or shoaling me like it's going out of style, nothing gets you through the intersection faster than cutting in front of the guy who got there first and is going to drop you once he manages to get past your fat ass.

Probably you're confusing "low anaerobic threshold" for "laid back", which is pretty much the opposite of what words mean.

I started riding with a group few weeks ago. A guy at work was trying to get me out with his group for months but I was too lazy for their early starts. Now I look forward to it every week. Home by 1pm with 100km done. Usually I wouldn't have left the house by then. Still do all my other rides solo though
