Canadian transit systems have notoriously shit maintenance.
A lot of transit companies do not put winter tires on the buses, and they run tires till they are bald.
Canadian transit companies run their drivers to exhaustion with bad schedules and long hours
Canadian road conditions change rapidly and often without warning.
You also have a ton of distractions driving a bus and passengers are only getting worse with schedule apps that show them when you are running late.
The latest driver is also pretty inexperienced, having only been driving for a year.
put bad tires, ice on the road, and either inexperience or a driver rushing because they are running late and something like this can easily happen.
About 25% of our buses had at least 1 completely bald tire. I have known 5 different drivers who have forgot to set the maxi brake (park brake or spring brake) before getting out of their bus and had their bus roll away without a driver. I have driven a bus that had only 1 front brake "work" and easily seize, resulting in a steering wheel that would almost jerk itself out of your hand. I also know drivers who drive taxi or Uber in their off time and put in 70+ hours on the road a week.
If anything I am amazed there is not more severe bus accidents in Canada. I won't take transit and I don't drive my car any where near a bus.
