In my experience most people, even someone like in OP's pic, will be surprised and taken aback by someone who just appears to go apeshit insane, yelling and screaming, and going for the throat, with no hesitation. Also making as much commotion as possible in a public place draws attention, that would-be thief knows this, and at that point he's more likely to decide it's not worth the trouble and take off rather than deal with the cops or (worse) an angry crowd. There's no 'hero fantasy' involved here, it's just a strategy to try to deal with a bad situation. Most thieves are expecting someone to be scared shitless of them and do nothing more than try to get away, they aren't expecting someone to appear to lose their shit and go nuts on them.
Now, what I really want to know, is who is the cowardly piece of crap in the suit (and also whoever is recording this), who basically isn't doing shit about something that is clearly wrong? Or is this vid staged? Really doesn't add up.
