I've never actually seen it in person so I don't quite understand the internal workings, but apparently each gear has its own freewheel, and one will engage forward power when you pedal forward, and the other will engage forward power in a differeng gearing when you pedal backward.

Think of it like this: when you pedal normally, you're engaging the inner chainring and one of the cogs regularly, while the secondary cog freewheels (or rather rotates backwards) since the chain is engaging it upside down. The opposite happens when you pedal backwards.
