A piece of clothing might tear, but it's probably still wearable, it still keeps you warm and it probably won't be that bad. You can also repair it in many cases.
A tire will flat but you can generally patch it, and if it does fail while riding, it's generally not dangerous.
A book can split at the spine but you can still read it.
Bicycle bearings fail to do their job when they wear out/ go dry, but they're still useable and certainly not dangerous.
A river bank will erode and change over time and it might get totally destroyed in a flood but that's hardly a failure or necessarily catastrophic and in a way, the bank of the river will always be good as long as the river exists, regardless of where that riverbank is or what its makeup is, it's still the bank to the river.
A rim brake rim if left to its own devices until it fails will probably fail catastrophically. If your point is that doesn't matter then you're right though.
