The Billerica and Bedford Railroad was the first 2 foot gauge railroad in America. It opened in 1877 in Massachusetts but operated for only a year before going bankrupt.

Among their equipment were unique cab-forward wood burning 0-4-4's like pic related.

Fun fact: 2 ft gauge (610 mm) is possibly the most popular gauge for amusement park railroads. Pic related is the Chance Rides C.P. Huntington model, which is the most successful themed train set built specifically for the amusement industry.

I was quite surprised recently to learn how many amusement park railroads use real vintage steam locomotives and rolling stock, or at least functional replicas thereof. I always though they were totally fake diesel or electric trains that were just built to resemble steam.

The fake stuff is the norm, unfortunately. There are only about 200 full-size steam locomotives in the US and Canada built before 1960 that currently run. I believe the list below covers all of the "legit" amusement park railroads 2 ft gauge and higher.

BEHOLD! The ultimate 2 ft gauge steam operation: the Fffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways in Wales (it's technically 23.50 inches, but...close enough). It inspired the creation of the Maine 2 ft gauge system and also the legendary 3 ft gauge system in Colorado, both of which were part of a late 19th century fad in the US rail industry called "Narrow Gauge Fever". This one railroad changed an entire industry on another continent!

BTW, having legit historic trains in an amusement park setting is a concept that's largely unique to the US (since most people in the US outside the bigger cities see trains in general as mysterious and exotic novelties), but there are rare examples elsewhere that use historic amusement park trains, such as Efteling in the Netherlands and Dreamworld in Australia.

There are lot's of narrow gauge historic trains in Europe. Mostly in museums and historic railway clubs. Many run regularly on heritage lines.

That was actually a railroad industry cliche back then. Companies would race to be first to build their lines to new lucrative locations (new towns, new mines, etc.), and they would spend so much money so quickly building the line that they would go bankrupt. Some would go bankrupt before their line was completed, and in some cases a single line would be built in phases over more than a decade by several companies that each went bankrupt while building a new segment for it.

Speaking of Crowns, there was a 3 ft gauge train set sold to a Kuwaiti amusement park that Saddam Hussein later seized during the First Gulf War. It along with other rides from the park were moved to a park in Downtown Baghdad. Today, there is still a 3 ft gauge rail line in the Baghdad park still in use, but the Crown train set is no longer in use and its fate is unknown.

Ah, the Vale of Rheidol Railway, the only narrow gauge line operated by British Rail. It was also the only steam operation run by BR from the time that standard gauge mainline steam ended in 1968 to when the line was privatized in 1989.

Really? I thought Cedar Point's was a replica. Went last summer and this summer, both times the loco looked like a replica that just emitted smoke through a smoke generator.

On another note, I realize it's a little bit big for this thread, but I recently got to ride the Kurobe Gorge Railway in Japan. 762mm gauge railway that operates as both a sightseeing line taking tourists through 24~ km of tall narrow gorge, and hauls equipment and other freight for the power company operating the hydroelectric stations in the gorge.

My worst experience at an amusement park was riding the 24 inch crown-pulled train in Canobie Lake Park, New Hampshire, when it derailed doing about 3mph. It wasn't even a slightly dangerous situation, and it took a while for everyone to even realize we were off the tracks. But there was a tard sitting behind me that started SCREAMING BLOODY MURDER and wouldn't stop no matter how hard his handler tried. He also shit/pissed himself in front of everyone when he got up. It was just so visceral and disturbing to be around. I felt sorry for everyone including the train operators. I hope they get paid enough for this shit.

The average hobbyist doesn't have the means to run 24-inch, but smaller ones like 15-inch or 7.5-inch are doable. There are also more clubs with railroads that small on which you can run it. Plus, the smaller they are, the easier they are to transport in the back of a pick-up truck.

There's only one standard gauge amusement park railroad that I know of. (pic related). Plus, the current market today for 24-inch is dominated by Chance Rides and their C.P. Huntington model, which has been mentioned already ITT.

Excellent citation, fellow New Englander.

That particular railroad was built from the ground up as an amusement park Railroad, by railfans who ran a tourist trap. They went out of their way to procure salvage locos that used to run on a standard gauge (!) logging railroad that ran nearby, and the railbed later was turned into a major state highway. The train is currently pushed by a wood fired Climax.
