Also have wired goldendance soundbone (sport type with individually rotatable pads and it folds, now only available via weird pseudo-ordering through ebay from the original korean maker), which I use with an Iasus bluetooth stealth throat mic (which has wired output) when I expect to be in noisy environments that the Trekz mic can't handle.

I have never been alerted to a potential danger by sound. I always see a danger before I have a chance to hear it. What's more, I have a hard time imagining a scenario where I would hear a sound, discover its source, assess that it represents a threat and then respond appropriately in time to avoid said threat.

Therefore, I always ride with both earbuds firmly in. If anything, I think this has made me a safer rider, because I'm never tempted to assume that not hearing a car means there is no car there.

When I'm just commuting in-town, I'll play a music stream on my phone just with the built in speaker. Not loud enough that others would notice. It's feasible, and couldn't be possibly loud enough to dilute my environmental noises.

If I'm riding at night or on trails, I don't listen to music. I need my ears tuned to the sounds of errant meth-billies and gibsmedats.

I can ride comfortably through blind corners where a bike path crosses a fairly well trafficked road because I'm listening. If I wasn't I wouldn't know if I was about to get T-boned.
If I hear anything no matter how silent, I will slow down to the point where I can peek the road before crossing.
Listening to music while bicycling is unnecessary, however I'm sure it's still enjoyable. If you are listening to music there are certain actions or maneuvers you will not be able to perform with full confidence.
There have been studies showing the positive effects of listening to Sony Walkmen while in public and that's wonderful.
Using earpods or headphones isolates the listener from their environment.
Using a speaker blends the music with the environment. Frankly if you're playing music where you care if other people hear or fear they would react negatively towards, you shouldn't be listening to that junk in public.

I like a good sound, I'm no audiophile, I'm using cheap earbuds, but they're pretty good cheap earbuds (maybe a little under 30$?), I don't want any less than those.

Bluetooth. No dangling wires at all. Also, NOT the kind of earbuds that go inside the ear canal. External, with cushion pads for comfort and blocking out most of the wind. Anyone riding/driving with earbuds that make him deaf to traffic might as well be riding hands-free, reading a book with one hand, untangling Xmas tree lights with the other, and using The Force to navigate. Those Darwin Award stories aren't gonna write themselves I suppose, so thanks for the laughs....

I can pay attention to more than one thing, can't you? I'm certainly not doing some deep study of what I'm listening to, it's just nicer to hear music than horns and screeches.
