It's not the epic flying gun in itself. It's the fact that the airframe the gun is mounted to is pretty epic in its own right, that's really nice to fly and can take quite a beating and still remain flyable.
Or so i'm given to understand. I've never flown an A-10 irl.

it was designed to kill modern tanks back when it came out and did it decently well, but nowadays it'd have a hard time filling that role. armor has advanced too much and the A-10 is slow and vulnerable.

They can't handle even outdated Anti Air. In the 1990's they were getting shot down by Iraqis with 1970's tech, to the point where they only allowed F-16's against the Republican Guard units because they were too easy to shoot down. It has been almost thirty years since then.

CF-105 was an interceptor F-18 and F-35 are multi-roll fighters. Different missions entirely. The Arrow had a mission in the 1950s/60s. Not so much now.

That said, had the USA not fucked with Avro, they would probably be perfectly capable of designing and building mission appropriate aircraft today.
