So is this the beginning of a potential BNSF-CSX mega merger, or what? If so, Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern will have to merge, too, just to compete.

You can say that until you're blue in the face but it hasn't been the case since the 80s. Fucking up their infrastructure by sweating the assets and a series of middling CEOs hasn't helped them long term. Gonna take a lot of money and time to get that line back up to where it should be.
