Hello /n/

I don't come to this board often but today something very sad happened to me: my bike was stolen.
This bike has literally saved my life a few times. Whenever I felt suicidal, I would go on a day long trip and then I would feel better.
And now it's gone.
I left it one (1) hour unsupervised and it just disappeared. Now I'm feeling really down.
Have you ever had a bike stolen? How was it? Did you ever get it back? Let's talk

You aren't going to get it back.
You can check Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist, but you're just as likely going to have you bike stolen who's just gonna scrap it and throw it in the pile with washing machine.

Don't ever leave your bike unlocked. The cops will NOT give a single shit about you.

Thanks. I had been saving up for a decent bike and now it gets stolen. I doubt I'll be able to get another until next year, and I'm not sure I'll even want to buy it by then.

I absolutely believe you. I just never thought it would happen to me. It was in the middle of the city so I thought nothing would happen, then boom. I find it very worrisome and scary too.

This is why I ride a cage to my bike routes or simply ride for the express purpose of riding. I'm not taking a chance with poor people everywhere looking at my bike with jealous eyes.

There's almost nothing you can do if someone wants to steal your bike bad enough. A chain can be cut with very heavy duty bolt cutters pretty easily, and even the toughest u-locks can be cut with a battery powered angle grinder. Your best bet is to bring your bike inside whenever you can, and to lock it up next to a nicer bike when you cant. Also cops hate cyclists with a passion, at least around here, so they'll tell you to fuck off if you report one stolen.

Unfortunately the middle of the city is the worst place (unless the city is in Japan, in which case you just use a tiny cable so that someone doesn't accidentally knock it over, or if your bike is incredibly nice and you're in Ueno or some shit), as nobody will give a shit if a random criddler walks up to a bike with a big fucking bolt cutter or an old volvo carjack and pops your lock.

Around here (Festering Shithole, Oregon) if you get anything stolen, the first thing to do is check out homeless camps and known bike chopshops, most of which are right out in public. That goes for bikes, pets (they'll steal dogs from yards, and don't even think about letting your cat out to play, because they'll catch and eat it), kiddos, anything that's not bolted down, really.

My first bike got stolen from a locked area at a shooting range, thiefes supposedly climbed over a wall to steal it, no idea how they knew it was there. The replacement bike I got was stolen from my parents garden shed where all our bikes were stored, also someone must have known its there. My third bike was stolen from a locked area in the locked shared basement of the appartment building I am currently living in, together with my brothers bike who stored it here because he thought it would be more save than in the university housing he just moved to. Also one time someone stole my derailleur and another time my disk brake pistons.

But fortunately the bikes were always insured and I could buy a sweet new bike everytime, as the insurance paid the same money as buying price. So the last bike I bought from insurance money + a bit extra is now a carbon fibre scott hardtail happily resting on the wall in my livingroom. Only over my dead body will this bike leave my hands. Ive learned my lesson. (Also I dont insure anymore)

get a old bike with marred paint for going around city and a good bike for leisure.

A gps tracking device welded into the frame and a Bicycle identification number can help prevent bike theft. Some places have indoor bike parking and valet to prevent this from happening.
My bike got stolen on christmas eve when i was 10 years old by some black kids that were supposedly my friends. one of my presents that day were a bike pump _----_

Op here. I went to the police station and filed a report, but yeah they told me that it was very uncommon to get a bike back.
So I've decided to kinda take the matters into my hands. I have been checking online retail and second hand shops in the area. Also I am thinking of doing a web scraper script to get periodical images from the websites. However if I were them I'd lay low for a while, so not getting my hopes up. Hopefully they're fucking morons tho.

Get renter's insurance. Make sure the policy covers your bike when not in the apartment.

Renter's insurance is cheap as fuck and helps you should there be some catastrophic fuck up and all your stuff is wet because some old junky or sweet old lady (depending on your level of wealth) fell asleep in the tub with the water on.

Also OP my suggestion is this: Save up as much money you can for the next month and buy a bike on black friday. The deals are insane for the direct-to-consumer brands.

just get a used CL bike and throw a wide range rear cassette on that bitch. Or just buy a low end unbranded bike that rides on Claris with a 11-30 in the rear.

my freshman year of college i rode my dads old 1980s shit bike around and liked it, so i got a new hybrid bike for about $500. within a few weeks, it was stolen from campus

i then bought a used connondale road bike for aroud the same price, $500, and in the 5 years since i've never left it alone ever. i would bring it into lecture halls and lock it to the handrails in the back and sit right in front of it. i walk it through grocery stores if i pick up a few things.

i never leave the thing alone, and i dont know how people with even halfway decent bikes can actually trust locking them up outside

Hello OP, I used to have a nice Trek 27X commuter and I must have put 2000-3000 miles on that bike in the 4 years I had it. I did not own a car nor had a license. It was my way of transport.
Then August 20th 2016 in Provo Utah at The Branbury Apartments, When the painters were repainting the apartment complex, they moved my bike from under the stairwell were I kept it locked to the fucking lawn or some shit and it was stolen, no idea how they moved it.

of course not. So I had to get a shitty walmart bike so I could commute to work because I was poor at the time. I ended up getting my license and car from a relative a few months later when I got married.

I'm from southern Europe. It was my first decent bike and really, the bike was going to get stolen sooner or later. I just secured it with one of those simple, key based chains. If I get another one, I'm saving for one of those sturdy ulocks.

It Was. I was heading out to go commute to work when I noticed it was gone. Called my job and told them. My boss was willing to come pick me up but I just took the bus. Filled a report with the Police and registered the Serial with the stolen bike database. Heard nothing since.

Yes last week, first time it ever happened. Parked it outside a friend's house like I often did, didn't chain it to the fence (because I never did, also lock too short, dumb me), returned later that night and it was just gone. First new, non-broken, fast and shiny bike I was able to afford after getting my first real job, drove it for about a year.

Thinkgen about simply buying it again but the updated '19 model year. And some insurance this time, we'll see. Driving the bus until it's ready for delivery (3 months, ugh)
