Riding a bike - at least in Germany - is about the safest thing you can do. All you have to do is know basic traffic law and be predictive. Drivers ed helped me a lot feeling safer on a bike because unlike in the US where you basically only have to parallel park, drivers ed's pretty strict here.

I am 20. I just got my drivers license and my own car. I had about 42 lessons and I think I drove about 25 times (roughly 400 km) my own now

First times it was in 2 big cars. But for myself I bought a small daihatsu. Thing never stalls and is much easier to drive. Get a lightweight, small car (mine weights 750 kg) that feels and drives like a cart. Easy to park, cheap costs, others behind you can easily see around you if its safe to overtake and you never have problems with big trucks passing you too close etc.

I think the moving away from 15 y.o restricted and 16 y.o Full license in the USA is creating dangerous drivers who are not confident in their abilities.

I can see how someone can be from a state with an 18 y.o. license requirement, be going off to college then never get a car then next thing you know you are 22 y.o and while everyone else who started at 16 is turning over their first 100k miles you haven't even got your license yet.

I know 15/16 year old people are dumb but they are driving mom & dad's car and they aren't going to be driving as much as a mid 20s guy who just learned to drive so he can get to work and not be fired.

Back when I started it was 13 learners, 14 restricted, 15 full license.

At 13 I took our extra car, made up some bullshit and took my friend and drove 300 miles to Saint Lous to see the Grateful Dead, then drove the 300 miles back overnight. Some part of me is kind of sad that kids in 18 year old driver states won't be able to do the same dumb right-of-passage stuff that I did. No regrets- Jerry died the next year.

Got my learners at 15/16, got the license without ever haven driven or looking at the manual and then I didn't drive again ever until I was 21.
With ZERO experience, really, I was able to stroll in and get a fully unrestricted license.

Since I live on the countryside, not being able to drive has got me a lot of apprasing looks and comments and therefore I developed some kind of fear of cars and driving.

Normally when a teenager gets their permit, their parents will practice with them. Find a good driver you know, ask them to accompany you the first few times. Start on small residential roads in your neighborhood and parking lots, work up to traffic signals and busier roads. Practice parallel and back in parking with garbage cans or other objects that it's okay if you hit them. Don't try highways until you are comfortable with lane changes and higher speeds.

Also really get a feel for your mirrors and blindspots. As long as you remember to check and pay attention, you will not make dangerous lane changes. Ideally do not practice with an aggressive, old, or dangerous driver. They will rub their bad habits off on you.

that was my biggest thing never having anyone to practice with. im sure i could drive okay (the driving school teacher and DMV person actually said I was a great driver) but i dont even have the desire to buy a car because of the expense of it and being basically a shut-in really no reason to have one

It *used to be* that there were such thing as 'driver education' and 'driver training' in highschool. They were sophomore year classes you took as electives. Between what they'd teach you in the classroom, the in-car training you'd get, and (hopefully) the supplemental training your parents would give you, you'd get a decent start at being a decent driver.

What changed is that over time schools didn't have the funding to continue those programs. So it fell to the parents to take care of that part of their kids' education, either themselves, or sending them to driving school. Guess how that worked out? Parents who could afford it (and were willing) paid for driving school, and maybe their kids turned out to be decently skilled drivers. The ones who couldn't? They did it themselves, or maybe they didn't. Either way the quality of new drivers suffered, because the parents weren't qualified instructors, and driving schools only turned out people who could pass tests, not necessarily giving them the nuances of being a really competent driver.

Now add to this, more recently, the influx of adult immigrants to the U.S. (and before ANYONE says it: I am not anti-immigrant; I am merely making an observation, here) who already 'know how to drive' (loosely speaking), and learn just enough to pass the DMV written and skills test -- but who have years of bad driving habits from driving in their home countries. So you get some really bad (by U.S. standards) drivers mucking things up even worse.

Now add to this the fact that automobiles have gotten quieter on the inside, and do more 'for' the driver, have become more 'comfortable', than ever before -- which insulates the driver from the road and the traffic around them. Add 'infotainment systems', and smartphones, and (etc) to distract, and you have inattentive drivers who weren't as competent and skilled in the first place as they could have been.

Finally, add to this media hype from the 'self driving car' advocates. I drive every day, and ride a bike most days, too, up to 200 or so miles a week, depending on the time of year. I do not fear for my life in either case. I don't cause accidents, I successfully avoid situations that would result in an accident, and I feel perfectly comfortable behind the wheel, like the vehicle is an extension of my physical body. *Anyone* can reach this Zen state with driving, it just takes *practice* and *experience*. Giving in to fear is not necessary.

Back in the day they used to use (rather primitive) driving simulators in Driver Ed classes. A VR-enabled simulator game for driver education/training strikes me as a good idea, at least in the early stages of driver training.

I have an old car with old brakes and it forces me to scan the road at a greater distance ahead of me. These fucks get used to stopping on a dime. No one slows to a stop; they just stop.
Sometimes I lay on my horn at people (lots of intersections were cross traffic doesnt stop but they do) and they dont even turn their heads. I dont even know if they can hear it.
No matter the weather, I can count on one hand the cars I see with windows rolled down. Even smokers only crack em.

I was involved in an accident when some moron decided to make a right from the left turn lane on a street 7 lanes across. Straight through traffic, like me, had no stop sign. I ended losing consciousness and hospitalized.

I'm a safe driver, but there's no accounting for people who just violate ROW, people in luxury German cars, and drunk drivers. These people can end up killing you and not even give you the opportunity to react.

I for one welcome self driving cars, because at least they won't be retarded about ROW.

That being said, you can anticipate most of this shit happening. Not every instance is someone driving down the wrong side of the highway It's all about knowing where you are and how traffic functions there. If you're not sure, unless you're high speeds, you're not going to kill anybody by erring on the side of caution. If some dude doesn't look like he's gonna stop or is scooting past a line somehow, just assume he's going to do it and prepare. Don't move, pull over, slow down, something.
Too many drivers act like they're a force of nature who's motion CANNOT be interrupted because muh ROW.

I can't fucking tell you how many times I see someone pull up to cross this one-way near me, and they come to a stop and only look the direction from which traffic could legally come. Kid riding a bike? Dead. Person walking their dog? Dead. Drunk driver going the wrong way? Yer both dead.

A lot of these people are driving to and from school, and also driving/showing off to friends, which creates dangerous conditions. When I was in high school, quite a few people died and/or killed their passengers or other drivers because they were showing off to friends and not paying attention, driving while drunk, or some other stupid shit.
