Any anon's here have done any train-hopping? Been getting seriously interested in either train-hopping or bike touring across Canada, wonder if anyone here has anything to say about the practice.

Wrong season bro.

Jump into open boxcars right outside of stops and jump off the train when it slows down before the station. Other than that dont try to jump onto a fast moving train you will die.

Yeah, definitely not planning on doing it in the winter but next summer potentially. Really want to try to hop over to western Ontario when it’s not frozen over

There's a lot more to it than you'd think. You need to know what trains are what so you know where you're going, what cars are actually rideable, spots where you can get on and off without getting spotted, how to safely board and deboard (especially if you're trying to get on while moving, if you cant jog alongside it's not safe), and when to stay hidden vs when you can be looking around.

Look for a youtube channel called Dangerous Dave or something like that. Just an ordinary guy from England who just had a train-hopping trip. Loads of good advice on what to/not to take, importance of making friends prior to your trip at places you may be (twitter is a must)

I loved that show; was gonna mention it but couldn't think of the name.
I saw them all on Netflix but that was in the early days of their streaming service. Maybe still there, who knows?

i used to hop on the train's roof on my daily Commute back in 2010, then Railway Reforms in 2013 included total prohibition of train hopping. pic related.

I have a bigger one I got for almost free, they're a good replacement for suitcases but carrying around by hand like that? Might be useful for electronics or other sensitive stuff though.
