Also, you can already get sub-$500 flights from California to Hawaii pretty easily. Southwest will just be the first cattle car airline in a long time to fly the route.

I had never tried it until I made one for my girl. I get it now. It's a fascinating combination of a lot of things I love. It's not for me. I still make them for her, but I love the sausage and 'shrooms.

Been stationed at Schofield Barracks, and vacationed on Maui before the army.

Hawaii is an expensive dump and you're a long flight to anywhere.

Interior Oahu is a humid red clay jungle at the lower elevations. It's only nice up high where it goes to grass and you get the breeze. Honolulu traffic is nightmare fuel and public transit sucks.

I've been to Hawaii multiple times. Maui is fucking beautiful and is a nice island to do a bit of everything. Beach, surfing, hiking, snorkeling, cycling, etc. Oahu has its issues yes, but is a great place for people with a lot of interest in WWII history. There's a lot more there than just Pearl Harbor.

I haven't had the opportunity to visit the big island or Kauai, but AFAIK Kuaui has an excellent reputation for camping and hiking.

I wouldn't want to live at any of these places full time, but they're excellent islands to go to for a vacation.

Doubtful, they'll most likely just pull out of the market if it doesn't work for them. Or best-case senario, Hawaiian, United, AA, Delta and other airlines operating from HNL to the US and back will have to compete with better prices

It will only affect people flying between California and Hawaii since Southwest will only be flying to Hawaii out of Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento, and San Diego.

You already have to transfer to get to Hawaii from most domestic markets not on the western seaboard. And when there are nonstop flights from those other markets, they usually only go to Honolulu, with a few exceptions.

For most people, that means they could fly Southwest to any of the main islands with just 1 stop in one of the aforementioned airports, which could still bring down the total cost of getting there for a lot of people.

About time too. Fuck the monopoly Hawaiian Airlines has on flights here to the mainland or inter-island flights. I can't wait until Southwest starts doing inter-island routes and Hawaiian has to lower their fares. It's ridiculous here sometimes how high they can get just to go to neighbor island or to even leave these shitty rocks, I can sometimes get cheaper flights to Australia/NZ then to California and now with Scoot flying here I can get super cheap tickets to Osaka and from there anywhere in Asia for cheap. Hawaiian is still a better airline than Southwest though in terms of service, just fuck their cost

Buddy Hawaiian has huge competition with flights to the mainland from the US carriers with United in particular having more flights to the East Coast than Hawaiian.

Sorry, I meant they have the monopoly on the inter-island flights. There was a small airline here that they ran out of business just a couple years ago too.
Either way this shithole needs someone like Southwest coming here to lower prices anyway since it's ridiculous that I can fly to Asia and Australia for cheaper then back to the main part of my own country.

I don't think those 737 Southwest have are suitable for frequent Hawaiian inter island flights.
Also, this is the consequence of having a cabotage rule in place that restrict foreign competition

I think they would at least with flights between Oahu and Maui and maybe to Kailua-Kona too. However I think if they did do this and they got prices down with Hawaiian then they'd stop because people here are too loyal to anything "Hawaiian".

That's pretty difficult with current oil price that even ferry line with high demand get axed because fuel are even a higher part of ferry operator cost base than planes
