I've done some incredible things with this bike. I would say at least 300 vertical kilometers I've rocked up and down with this bad boy in the Rocky mountains of Alberta, many "first descents" hard to confirm but very likely. It's worked fabulously for everything from XC, DH bike parks, extreme alpine descents, and multi-day rides.
Very capable frame, compliant steel ride, but plenty of stiffness for power transfer. Still some good options for 26+ tires available. Including some beast 3" tires that aren't available in any other format.
The geo and wheelsize is a bit dated by now. I wish it was a bit slacker. My new Nukeproof is more capable in just about every single way. More comfy to climb even. The big 29er wheels, the more modern components, huge rear travel. It's just way faster and more efficient for the rugged terrain here. Lighter too.
The Surly is noticeably better, however, when things get really slow, techy, and tight such as hairpin switchbacks.
That said, this Surly will always have a special place in my heart and I still love it and will continue to ride it.
