Also, the Federal Government literally just told people "if you can built your own infrastructure, you can get that land", this was a part of the US's policy of "manifest destiny" where they were pushing people to settle the parts out West, because they were largely uninhabited.
By telling people "if you can build there, you can have the land for free", then that's what lead to the railroad companies forming and building railways, not for the profits, not for contruction of a railway empire, but for the free land the federal government was giving away for free.
If ancap is so good? Then why did the railroad companies totally abandon passenger services as soon as they could? It ended up isolating many towns and communities which only had the railway to travel, while also abandoning actually profitable mainlines around large population density areas. If ancap is so good, then why does the United States have basically no high speed rail (Accela Express isn't even HSR, it's just an express train service, and Brightline is basically outdone by even regional/commuter rail in Europe and Asia).
Ancap is just businesses working on the basis that profit is everything, and that once something stops being profitable, just cut it, who cares what people rely on that service or product?
True HSR and high density rapid transit is built using government money with the interest being that it will boost the economy, increase social mobility and also make far more areas accessible spreading out the wealth geographically as more areas become viable for business.
France, Germany, Japan, China, Italy, Spain, Taiwan, the list goes on.
