If you ride through a wild area, better have one in your pocket (not in a bag because you may need to reach for it quickly). Also, animals usually don't attack if you have your own pack, so riding in a group will be safer.
Luckily there are no wild dogs in my neighborhood (no packs at least). There are some wolf packs in the mountains 100km from my city, but they learned to keep away from humans and don't attack unprovoked. I never needed to use any weapon on a bike ride.
